He smiles wider. “No, like the goddessVenus. Unless you’re one of those people who maintain she should only be called Aphrodite, but I think Venus suits you.”

I stare back at him, my lips agape and my mind racing. My brain is working a little better now, so I understand fully what he means and I’m impressed he knows his mythology. And I’m just as stunned.

He paid me a huge, huge compliment, and coming from a guy with looks like his it adds a million bonus points.

“Oh. Thank you.”

A light of curiosity mingling with dominance flashes in his eyes, making them appear brighter. “Don’t tell me you’re not playing tonight’s game.”

“Game?” My eyes widen. I wasn’t aware there was a game going on here.

I glance around trying to figure out what he means but I find nothing to suggest anything about a game.

Except… the big silver sign near the DJ box on the dance floor that says, ‘Have fun with Come As You Aren’t Night.’

The handsome stranger follows my gaze and nods slowly. “That game. Like on Halloween, you can be whoever you want to be tonight.”

What an interesting, oh-so-appealingidea. I would love to be anyone besides me right now, and this guy just called me the goddess of love.

I won’t crush his perception of me by correcting him and letting him know I’m more like the goddess of bad luck.

“You think I should be Venus?” I smile back at him, shoving the negative thoughts away to the back of my mind.

“Of course. You’re beautiful, so it’s a given.” He winks at me and my entire body blushes with a flush of heat. The sensation pulls at my insides and spirals down to my core, making me clench my thighs.

“Thank you. That’s nice of you to say.”

“I take it that means you weren’t playing the game.”

“No. I just got here.” I assume he must know that part already. “I was just going to grab a couple of drinks.”

He raises thick brows and glances briefly at my cocktail as if trying to figure me out. “By yourself?”

“Something like that.” I shuffle nervously on the barstool, feeling like a loser loner again, but the sexy smile returns to his face, chasing away my fears.

That smile of his also has the double-edged effect of unearthing the nest of butterflies permanently living on the floor of my stomach.

“Well, I have a confession to make.” He runs a hand over his thick hair, smoothing it back.

“What’s that?” I sound as eager to know as if he’d just offered to tell me all his secrets. The inquisitive part of me would love that. The part that’s attracted to him would love it even more.

He leans closer, so close I can smell the sandalwood scent of his aftershave and the scent of him. He smells like power and all sorts of forbidden things.

“I wasn’t playing the game either.” He keeps his eyes locked on mine. “But Ireallywas hoping you were.” His voice drops a notch lower and his words send a zing of electricity through me.

I’m caught off guard by the intensity of the feeling, and it freezes me in place.

“Oh.” My voice is a little above a whisper. “I see.”

“What if we played it together? I’m sure you’d have more fun with me than drinking by yourself.” His gaze flicks down to my drink then crawls leisurely back over me.

My mind is stunned again, but this time I’m thinking. And considering his offer.

Should I play this game with the handsome stranger?

If Zoe were here she would at least slap me because that’s not even a question. I don’t think any woman in their right mind would turn this man down.

My answer should be a resounding yes. Especially since I promised myself I wouldn’t be in self-destruct mode while I was here.
