That’s all he fucking cares about. How this will make him look. Anything I do will reflect positively or negatively on the company, and he can’t for one second stomach the thought that this may come back on Kane’s racing.

“That’s stupid, I’m not doing it,” I say, crossing my arms over my chest, knowing full and well that I sound like a twelve-year-old, but I don’t care right now.

“You will do it!” He stands up out of his chair and storms around his desk. I dig my fingernails into the leather arms of the chair I’m in, waiting for him to strike me. We’ll see whose pressing charges then. “I don’t care how stupid you think it is, Bodhi. It is nowhere near as stupid as you risking bad exposure over it. You will do it today. Because, so help me God, if you don’t…”

I wait, barely breathing.

“If you don’t, and end up getting penalized for your reckless driving, then we have no one to drive for the company. That means no income, which is really going to affect your mother.”

The glint in his eye says more than his words ever will, but I know all too well just how badly she’ll suffer if I don’t just comply. He’s never put hands on her that I’m aware of, but Thompson Kane would never stoop so low. No, he’ll just stop paying the bills for the nursing facility that her parents are at again, leaving it until the very last minute when they’re facing eviction before feigning forgetfulness and smoothing the whole thing over, letting my mom worry herself sick.

God forbid he just move them into the house where My mom can be with them every day. That would be too kind a thing to do. I don’t understand what he has against making my mother happy, but what I understand even less is why she continued to put up with him for as long as she has. I even told her once to just leave him and let me take care of Grandma and Grandpa’s bills, but she wouldn’t have it.

“You’re unbelievable,” I seethe between clenched teeth.

“Believe it, boy. Now go, I’m tired of seeing your face.”

He turns, returning to his seat and facing the computer, dismissing me.

I stand and storm out, my fists hanging white-knuckled at my sides. I want to punch a hole through the glass door of his office, but I know that he would just hold that against my mom as well. The motherfucker.

With no other option, I leave in search of Keaton, but have no idea where to start. I pull out my phone and skim over the image I took of her insurance last night, noting her address, but I don’t want to show up on her doorstep and scare the shit out of her family. That would look even worse, and I don’t need the backlash.

I only know one person who may be able to tell me where to find her, so for the second time in two days, I head to Sancte Alto to talk to Milo.

“Back again so soon?” Milo says, wiping his hands on a shop towel as I approach.

“What? You already tired of me?”

“After last night’s stunt?” he says, brows raised.

I throw my hand over my heart. “You wound me,” I say before laughing and reaching out to grasp his hand before leaning in for a quick hug.

“You hear about your CB?”

“That, and I need to know where to find that girl,” I sigh, leaning my forearms on the side of the car Milo is working on, and staring under the hood aimlessly.

“Keaton?”

“Yeah, her.”

“Why?” The furrow in his curious gaze gives me pause. Does he like this chick or something? He would have mentioned it last night if he did, wouldn’t he have?

“My pain in the ass dad wants me to smooth shit over with her. Make sure she isn’t going to say anything about me,” I sigh, hating that I even have to do this. But I would do anything to ensure my mom is left out of this bullshit.

“Like what?” his dark eyebrows slanted in a frown.

“I don’t know. Really, what could she say about the incident that wouldn’t incriminate her as well?” I ask.

“So, what are you supposed to say?”

“He wants me to pretty much just pay for her damages out of pocket so that it can’t come back on the company or something and explain that it was all me and had nothing to do with Kane’s Racing.” I roll my eyes, hating how stupid this whole thing is.

“Uh, I’m pretty sure no one thought it had to do with Kane’s,” he says, shaking his head. Milo knows exactly how my dad can be, though.

“I know, but he’s gonna make trouble with my mom if I don’t cooperate.”

“He said that?” Milo’s eyebrows shoot up in concern.
