“Not in so many words, but he definitely implied it.”

“That motherfucker,” Milo says, throwing his towel down.

“My thoughts exactly. I just need to know where to find her, so I can at least say I offered to help. I have her address from the insurance information, but I don’t want to be that asshole that shows up on her doorstep.”

“Yeah, that might not go over so well,” Milo laughs. “I don’t know if she’s there today, but she works at the Coffee House on Main.”

“It’s worth checking, I guess.” I stand, shoving my hands into my pockets. Hopefully she’s there so I can get this shit over with.

Chapter 10

“Girl, you don’t look like you got a second of sleep last night,” Teagan, my co-worker at the Coffee House, says to me after clocking in for the lunch shift.

“That’s probably because I didn’t,” I sigh, wiping down the counters.

After Sander dropped me off last night, I paced my room for nearly two hours before forcing myself to lie down. Even then, I couldn’t sleep. Worry over my brother’s car, my job, getting the money to pay Mateo, and Sander’s antics were weighing heavily on my mind. It wasn’t until about two o’clock that I finally fell asleep, only to be jolted awake by my alarms at five.

Sticking to his word, Sander picked me up for work and got me here in time to open. Despite how awkward it was last night, I told him if he stuck around for a few minutes, I’d get him a muffin and some coffee to go.

That was about six hours ago, and every single minute of the day has dragged by.

“It shows,” Teagan says over her shoulder as she starts a fresh pot of coffee.

I stop mid-wipe and turn, cocking my head at her.

“Did you just tell me I look like shit?”

“Hey,” she raises her hands placatingly, “your words, not mine.”

I roll my eyes, knowing she’s only teasing, and grumble thanks under my breath.

When I feel her hand gently rest on my shoulder, I turn and consider the worry in her furrowed brow.

“Is it… is it your mom?” she asks softly.

Utterly confused at what she might mean, my questioning gaze prompts her to further elaborate.

“Is that why you didn’t sleep well?”

Realization dawning, I pull myself up from my slouched stance, lips forming an ‘o’ shape as I shake my head from side to side.

“No, no; Ma’s fine.” Teagan deflates and relaxes against the counter beside her. “Some asshole hit my car last night, and I have no idea how I’m going to pay for the damages on top of everything else going on right now.”

Teagan and I aren’t close outside of work, but she knows enough about my situation to understand my trepidation.

“Oh, damn,” she winces, “that sucks.”

“Yeah, it does.”

“Is that why Officer Fine-as-hell dropped you off today?” she waggles her eyebrows suggestively and I can’t help but laugh at her antics.

“What, are you stalking me or something? How’d you know he dropped me off?”

“Yes, Keaton. I woke up before the sun just to watch you arrive at work, and I have to say that I am heartbroken with you choosing him over me.”

Teagan holds her hand over her heart and pushes her lower lip out.

“My apologies,” I laugh, turning back to my task.
