I roll my eyes, really not wanting to hear this shit again. Every time it’s the same damn thing.

I’m a total fuckup.

I can’t do anything right.

I’ll never be as good a racer as Tommy was.

I’m not taking this seriously, and I’m just jeopardizing our entire family’s business.

It’s starting to get old.

“It was an accident, just like the police report said.”

“Don’t bullshit me, Bodhi. I wasn’t born yesterday,” he leans across his desk, wagging his finger at me, spit flying from his mouth as he yells.

“Obviously,” I say under my breath.

“If that officer hadn’t been a fan, this entire ordeal would have played out drastically different.”

“The paperwork would have been the same. Being a fan didn’t change how the accident played out,” I sigh, ready to get out of this office. The smell of toner coming off the printer across the room always gives me a headache.

“And the car you hit?”

About time he asks about that. “Just some minor body damage.”

“Is the driver pressing charges?”

Of course, that’s all he’d be worried about. Not whether I permanently disfigured the person or anything.

“Why would they? It. Was. An accident.” I draw the words out, hoping maybe this time they’ll stick.

“Yes, but if they knew who you were, then they also would have known that you can afford to be sued. Some people will do it just to make a few extra bucks.” He explains this like I don’t know how people’s minds work.

“I doubt it goes that far. We exchanged insurance information. It’s all going to be taken care of. Stop freaking out over nothing.”

“It’s not nothing, Bodhi. It’s you continuing to be reckless. Some days, I wonder if you even care about this family anymore.”

That son of a bitch. He knows damn well that I care about our family. Him, not so much anymore, but the only reason I’m here dealing with him at all is because racing for him was the only way to ensure that my mom continued to be taken care of.

“I said I handled it. Once the insurance company is called, it’s out of my hands.”

“Well, put it in your hands,” he says, pulling out his office chair and seating himself across from me.

“What do you mean?” I ask, leveling him with a stare.

“Find them and offer to pay for all the damages yourself,” he says, and it doesn’t sound for one second like he’s making a suggestion. Just demanding what I do with my money. If he wants it all taken care of so badly, he can pay for her car himself.

“Why would I do that?”

“Out of the… goodness of your heart.” He acts like it damn near choked him to say that to me. Too bad it didn’t.

“That’s what the insurance company is for.”

“And they will.”

“Then why—”

“Damn it, Bodhi, just do it. Out of pocket. It makes you look good,” he shouts.
