“Colton has been helping them.”

“He has? What?”

“I guess he has been putting money into a brokerage for them, and he’s been managing it and adding money and”—he sounds frustrated—“I feel a little bit annoyed that Mom and Dad didn’t tell me this. And I’m kind of annoyed at Colton because this isn’t his responsibility, but I’m thankful that Mom and Dad trusted him enough to go to him.”

“But why would he do that? Why would he help them?”

“Well, that’s what I was wondering myself,” Sam says. “I went off on him when I found out.”

“Oh?” I say. “You didn’t know?”

“Of course I didn’t know.” He’s angry now. “So I asked him why, and he told me it was because he was in love with you. And because he’s in love with you, he wants to take care of Mom and Dad as well.”

“Oh,” I say, shocked that Colton had told Sam that he was in love with me. “I didn’t know he was doing this, Sam. Really, I didn’t even know Mom and Dad were in trouble.”

“I know,” he says. “They didn’t tell anyone aside from him.” He sighs. “Anyway, I just want you to know that you have my blessing.”

“I do?”

“I know Colton. He’s like a brother to me. He’s one of the best guys I know.”

“But you always said that he was a player and that...”

“Doesn’t mean a player can’t settle down,” Sam says, laughing. “Anyway, just wanted you to know that I know, so you don’t have to hide things from me. Okay, sis?”

“I know.”

“I’m here for you.”

“I know.”

“I just want to make sure you know because Mom and Dad obviously didn’t think I was going to be there for them, so I want you to know you can come to me at any time.”

“Thank you,” I say and hang up. I look over at Isabel and Sarah, who are staring at me with wide eyes. “Guys, you are not going to believe what’s going on. But one second.” I text Colton.

Me: Thank you. I miss you.

He texts me back immediately.

Colton: Finally. I’ve been waiting for you to say that you miss me.

I just smile at the text.

Isabel glances at me. “What is going on?”

“Colton is the perfect guy,” I say. “He really is. He’s been...” I pause as I notice a guy heading toward us with a guitar. I blink and sit back. Sarah and Isabel look around and their jaws drop. The guy starts singing an Ed Sheeran song, one of my favorite songs, and then he hands me a dozen red roses. “Are you sure these are for me?” I blink.

“You’re Ella, right?” he says.

“Yeah.”

“They’re for you.” He continues playing the song, and I can feel my heart racing. Then I see someone coming up behind him. My heart freezes when I see it’s Colton. He’s wearing a black suit with a red tie, and there’s a goofy grin on his face. He has a bow on his head and we start laughing.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hey,” I say back. “What is going on?”

“Well, I thought that I would surprise you.”
