“Yo, you know, Slim Shady?”

“Oh, I’ve definitely heard of Slim Shady,” Colton says. “I didn’t realize that there were two.”

“Well, I’m going to be like the better Slim Shady.”

“Oh, cool,” Colton says as we walk up the stairs toward my apartment. “Ella, you didn’t tell me that your boyfriend was a rapper.”

“He’s not my boyfriend. This was just our first date.”

“The first of many, if I’m lucky,” Zevo says and looks back at me. “Because, honey, I will take you out and not for any money.”

Colton starts coughing, and I can tell he’s trying not to laugh. This is my worst nightmare come true. We stop outside my door, and I fish in my handbag for my keys. I turn to look at them, and I yawn. “Oh, I am feeling a little bit tired. If you guys just...”

“Oh, you could make some coffee or something,” Colton says. “I’m really looking forward to playing Monopoly with you guys, and I’ve been waiting so long for you to get back that...”

“Yeah, come on, Ella. Don’t be a bee-yach just because you think we’re going to beat you,” Zevo says, and I press my lips together. We walk into the apartment, and I watch as Zevo looks around. “This is a cool place. I dig. I could live here, man. My roommate is getting on my nerves.”

“If you’ll hold on a second, please,” I say as I rush into the kitchen. Colton follows behind me. There’s a smirk on his face.

“Ooh, so that’s the sort of guy you’re going for now.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“I mean, you tried with the rich older men and that didn’t work. Now you’re trying with the young losers.”

“He’s not a loser. He...”

“Oh, so sorry. I shouldn’t say loser. I forgot that he’s the second Eminem. After all, we all know the real Slim Shady is not a loser.” He starts chuckling as if he’s just told the funniest joke in the world. “I can’t believe I just said that sentence.”

“I can’t believe you just said that and tried to rap,” I say, my lips twitching, even though I want to be mad at him. I stare into his blue eyes for a couple of seconds, and all I want to do is kiss him.

Passionately.

And with tongue.

I want to wrap my arms around his neck and breathe him in.

Instead, I step back. “What are you doing here, by the way?”

“I wanted to make sure that you got home okay.”

“Really? Why?”

“Because I know how men can be in the city, and when you said you were bringing some strange guy back...”

“I never said I was bringing a strange guy back.”

“When you said you were bringing your date back, I wanted to make sure that he wasn’t a psychopath or a serial killer.”

“Why, do you think I have poor judgment or something?” I cock my head to the side and look him up and down. I hope he doesn’t answer me because even I think I have poor judgment in that moment. The fact that my date with Zevo has lasted more than five minutes is proof of that.

“Do you think you have good judgment, Ella?” There’s a knowing look on his face and I wish that I could tell him off for being so high and mighty. “Don’t you wish you went to dinner with me instead?” he says, leaning forward and whispering in my ear. It feels sensual and intimate and I hate myself for enjoying the feel of his warm breath on my skin so much. It’s like I crave any and all contact I have with him.

My brain is screaming that, yes, I wish that I’d gone to dinner with him. My heart is screaming, yes, I wish I’d gone to dinner with him as well, but I’m not going to let him know that. “I had a really good time with Zevo.”

“Zevo?” he says. “Zevo is his real name?”

“I don’t know,” I say, attempting to avoid eye contact with him.
