My phone beeps and I look at the screen, expecting to see Colton’s name, but it’s not him. It’s one of my good friends, Sarah. I answer quickly.

“Hey girl, I can’t talk long. I’m at work.”

“Work?” She sounds surprised and I realize I haven’t updated her on any of my recent shenanigans. “Yay, I’m so glad you got a job.” She sounds pleased for me because she knows the state of my finances just as well as Isabel does.

“Oh, it’s not even a real job,” I say in hushed tones. “You don’t even want to know what drama I’ve gotten myself into.”

“Ooh, do tell.” She giggles. “I need some excitement in my life. Is it super dramatic?”

“Really, Sarah?”

“Sorry, but you can’t just leave me hanging. How do you get a job that isn’t really a real job? And does it pay?”

“It pays, but it’s not like I even applied for it.”

“You got a job you didn’t apply for? How?”

“I slept with the boss,” I say darkly and I smile when I hear her gasp in shock. I really shouldn’t be enjoying telling the story so much. It’s not like it makes me look good.

“What is this new job? You’re not a stripper, are you?”

“No, I am not a stripper. What do you and Isabel think of me?” I moan, wondering why both of my friends assumed I would become a stripper or an escort. “I’m working for a large corporation as an assistant.”

“You what?”

“To the CEO.”

“Damn, girl, you slept with an old man?”

“Colton is not an old man.”

“Colton.” She pauses. “Colton Hart? Sam’s best friend?”

“Yeah, maybe.” I don’t really want to admit that, but I guess I don’t have a choice. His name isn’t that common.

“Wait, didn’t you work for him before and he fired your ass on the same day you started?”

“Don’t remind me.”

“You slept with him?”

“Like I said, don’t remind me.”

“Girl, I need the tea.”

“I will tell you later. Hold on a sec.” I put my phone down next to my stomach and smile at the blonde receptionist. “Hello, today is my first day. I’m Colton Hart’s new assistant.”

“Oh, you must be Ella Wynter.” She grabs a badge and hands it to me. Her eyes flicker up and down my attire and I can tell she’s not impressed. “This is a temporary badge to get you into the elevators and up to the tenth floor, where you’ll be working with Mr. Hart. You will have to go to HR to get an official badge sometime this week. They will take a photo, so you might want to do your hair and some makeup.”

I try not to blush at her comment. I was sure she must have been wondering how I was able to get this job. I wasn’t going to be stupid enough to tell her.

“Thank you,” I say, taking the temporary badge and heading toward the elevator. I feel like a fraud. I have no idea what I’m really meant to be doing and pessimistic thoughts of when I worked for Colton previously flash into my mind.

I get into the elevator and I look around. There’s no one else in here with me and I’m grateful for that. I need to gather my thoughts. I press the button to take me to the tenth floor and stand there quite impatiently. I’m feeling slightly nervous. I’m slightly overwhelmed by the events of the last forty-eight hours. Everything in my life seems to be going crazy and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I had been complaining to Isabel and Sarah about how monotonous my life was just a few months ago, but I didn’t think I wanted this much excitement.

The elevator pinged and I walked out and looked around. I had no idea where I was going. I see a handsome young man sitting at a desk to the right and I walk over to him.

“Hi,” I say, smiling widely. “I am here to work for...”
