“I think she just really needs a mother in her life, you know?” he says. “But maybe one day we’ll find someone as perfect as you to make her pizza and…” I’m very grateful that the bell rings and cuts him off. “Oh, I guess that’s time.” He frowns, looking disappointed. “Well, I hope your dates continue to go well.”

“You too, Danny. I hope you meet someone good,” I say, smiling at him. I’m grateful when the night ends. I tick off the box next to Russell’s name, hand it in to the people running the event, and look for Isabel.

“So did you like anyone?” she says.

“Yeah, there was one guy who was kind of cute and seemed normal. What about you?”

“There were a couple of guys I thought were fun,” she says, nodding. “Let’s see if we match.”

“Yeah, let’s see,” I say. We all stand around for what is ten to fifteen minutes, and then the host calls us all to the side and gives us our matches. My eyes are wide and happy when I see that Russell is standing there.

“Hey. You ticked my name, I’m guessing.”

“I did. Did you check me?”

“Yeah. You were the only sane one here tonight.”

“I guess I won’t tell my best friend you said that.”

“Oh?” he says, cocking his head to the side. “Why is that?”

“Because she’s one of the girls that’s here tonight as well.”

“Oh.” He bursts out laughing. “Then yeah, maybe don’t tell her I said that. Which one was she?”

I nod over to Isabel. “Her.”

“Oh,” he says. “Yeah, she is really pretty. But she was going on about different honeymoon destinations, and I thought that was a weird question, seeing as she had never met any of us before.”

“Oh, yeah. That sounds like Isabel. She likes to say controversial things just to see how people react.”

“Well, I hope it worked for her,” he says. We stand there making small talk, and then Isabel heads over to me.

“I got no matches,” she says, shaking her head. “Can you believe it? Not one match.”

“I mean, you were talking about honeymoons with the guys.”

“I just didn’t want anyone to be scared off by the fact that I was looking for marriage,” she says, giggling. “I mean, it’s not like I’m looking for a one-night stand. I wanted them to know if you match with me, there’s a possibility that…” She pauses as she looks over at Russell. “Oh, hey,” she says, smiling at him. “You guys matched?” She looks at me in surprise, and I nod.

“Yeah. This is Russell. Russell, this is Isabel.”

He says, nodding, “I remember.”

I look over at Isabel. “You didn’t select him, did you?”

“No.” She shakes her head. “He looked aghast when I brought up the honeymoon stuff. I knew he wasn’t going to select me back.” She grins. “But I don’t mind that you guys are a match. Do you want to get out of here and grab a drink somewhere?”

“Sure,” I say, looking over at Russell. “That sounds good to me.” We head out of the bar and walk down the street until we come to another dive bar at the corner.

“Let’s go in here,” Isabel says. We walk in, and I immediately groan because I see Sam and Colton standing at the bar. Those are the last two people I want to see.

“Hey, is everything okay?” Russell asks as we step inside. “Your mood immediately changed.”

“Oh, it’s fine. My brother is just here and…” I pause as Colton walks up to us.

“Hey, how’s it going?”

“Hi,” I say, glaring at him. “Fancy seeing you here.”
