“I know my way, not senile yet. I don’t walk into wardrobes, pee in corners, and I never take personally what you say in anger.” The laughter flashed in his eyes.

Nana felt her skin prickle, and not in a good way. She wished she had the energy to toss him out on his backside, but he was older than her, and she didn’t want to break him – he might need to stay around longer to recuperate, and she wanted him gone as soon as possible.

When she looked at the doorway, Sabastian and Verity were lurking there. It was a strange sight, but it filled her with happiness knowing father and daughter were together again. “I’m fine; leave me be,” she announced to nobody in particular.

“Pride before the fall and after,” Marvin said, quickly retreating to the doorway.

“Be careful,” Nana warned. “We wouldn’t want you to magically take a tumble, would we?” she added with a sparkle of mischief in her eyes.

“I have a feeling you’re going to be just fine,” Marvin said. “True evil never dies.”

“Which means I’ll outlive you. That makes me content,” Nana tossed back.

“I can see how it would,” Marvin said, chuckling to himself as he disappeared into the hallway.

Nana couldn’t help but smile to herself. The man wound her up like a child’s spinning top, but he could still make her smile.

“This is what happens in the movies,” Jennifer explained. “The child, that’s me, goes to stay somewhere else, and the lady, that’s … sort of you, falls in love with the man.”

Evie’s mouth was opening and closing like a fish out of water, but she couldn’t come up with the words to express how wrong that was.

Amy tilted her head to the left and considered her friend. “I’ve never seen anyone so lost for words before. Do you think her head is going to explode?” she asked Dani.

Dani snorted a chuckle. “I think there are a million and one thoughts going through her head right now, they are all vying for attention, and she needs a reboot.”

“That I can do,” Amy said and zapped Evie with a whip-like jolt of magic.

Evie shrieked and snapped to attention; she turned wide-eyed disbelief at her friends. “What was that for?”

“Reboot,” Dani and Amy said together.

When Jennifer chuckled, it brought her aunt’s attention right back to her, and she tried not to grin but couldn’t make it happen.

“This is not a movie,” Evie informed her niece, hoping she could make the child see that you didn’t mess with someone’s love life or lack of it.

“But it could be,” Jennifer said. “And the guy gets the girl; that’s sort of you. Not really a girl, cos you’re old, but…”

“Okay,” Amy said. “I can see where that one goes, and it’s nowhere good,” she added. “We’re having a sleepover, so you don’t kill the child in her sleep tonight,” she whispered as she walked by Evie.

“Then she wins,” Evie said. “Children aren’t supposed to win,” she whispered back.

“Or you win by having a night off. Get to know your mate,” Amy whispered back and snatched her head back on her neck when she got a death glare in return. “Or a long hot bath with bubbles and wine.”

“That last one sounds good,” Evie said, frowning.

“And leave the little matchmaker to us,” Amy said. “We promise to try and return her as good as new tomorrow morning.”

“Try?” Evie said, her voice pitching higher.

Amy grinned. “You never know what might happen between now and morning, right?”

“Somehow, I don’t think you’re talking about Jen anymore,” Evie said, folding her arms defensively.

“I can’t help it if you have a dirty mind,” Amy replied.

“What?” Evie shrieked.
