“Tell me your mind didn’t immediately flash to Parker, probably naked, and I’ll apologise,” Amy said, chuckling, and that laugh sounded dirty right down to the core.

Evie’s cheeks flushed red, and she felt a little hot under the collar, but she couldn’t lie; she had thought about Parker, and he had been naked in her imagination.

“There you go,” Amy said in victory. She’d seen a few emotions flash across her friend’s face, and they told a story that she wasn’t about to repeat in front of Jennifer. “So, go, be gone.”

“I…” Evie found her feet wouldn’t move; she was rooted to the spot. There was a mixture of excitement and trepidation inside of her, and that was Amy’s fault for making her think about mating with Parker.

“The door is behind you, just walk backwards, and you’ll find it,” Amy said, grinning and mocking her.

“Look,” Evie said quietly. “It’s just…” She groaned.

“Been a while?” Amy said with a teasing smile. “Haven’t trimmed the bush?”

“Amy!” Evie said, shocked and taking her mind in a whole different direction. She was now hurriedly trying to think of when she’d last groomed. Then a light came on above her head that morning in the shower because she’d drawn blood on her calf – then she realised that she’d rushed to do that while Parker had been in the house making coffee.

“Subconsciously, you knew, right?” Amy asked.

Evie snapped back to reality. “Knew what?”

“You were gonna get it on,” Amy whispered.

“I did not,” Evie said in rushed denial, meaning she hadn’t thought the lie through or prepared her innocent look.

Amy’s smile told her she could see right through her. “Sure, you did, he’s your mate, and it’s written all over your face.”

Evie opened her mouth, but it was useless to deny it; Amy had her number. “I’m going home now,” she said. “Do not feed Jennifer until the morning.” The sugar rush would have them all up all night.

“I’ve seen that movie, Gremlins, right?” Amy said, chuckling.

“On second thoughts,” Evie said, looking over her shoulder at her niece. “Jennifer, go see if they have cookies in the kitchen.”

“Yea!” Jennifer said, jumping to her feet and rushing off before her aunt could change her mind.

“Oh,” Amy said, curling her top lip. “That was cold, hard, heartless and just plain mean.”

“And a lesson learned,” Evie said, smiling victoriously as she headed for the door. “Some of us will get some sleep tonight.”

“Yeah, I’m betting that’s not you,” Amy called after her with another dirty laugh that almost made Evie trip over the doorstep.

CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

~

Evie slammed the front door behind her, uncaring if the gruff voice did shout out his window to tell her to be quiet. She was miffed off that not only was her niece duplicitous, and at such a young age, but that her friends, who should have known better, were trying to throw her under the mating bus as well.

It felt like she was walking a lonely path where nobody seemed to have her back. She looked up from inspecting her shoes, only to find Parker standing beside the car, looking so relaxed with his butt against her paintwork, his big muscled arms folded, and a tilt to his head as he watched her that she felt like kicking him in the shin just to prove a point – her bark was not worse than her bite – that should have been something he could understand.

“Everything…?”

“Nope!” Evie said, holding up her palm to stop him from talking. In her experience, men talking rarely made things better.

“But Jennifer is…?”

“Nope!” Evie said again, turning up the path to the house and grabbing the keys from her back pocket.

“You know two nopes don’t make a hi,” Parker said, suddenly by her side.

Evie stopped what she was doing and turned to stare at him. When she slowly raised her right eyebrow, he frowned.
