“I say, don’t tempt bloody fate!” Hope replied. “You’re supposed to be on the side of good, not evil.”

“A mate is evil?” True asked; now the shoe was on the other foot, she was enjoying it.

“You seemed to think so,” Hope reminded her.

“But look where I am now,” True said, shrugging.

“Living with He-Man, fighting with your sister, and with Nana and Grandpa visiting?” Hope grinned.

True narrowed her eyes. “None of that is my doing.”

“Except your mate,” Hope replied with a victory grin.

“That’s it; I’m going to call you a mate,” True said, unable to win the point but determined to try.

“Go ahead,” Hope said, hedging her bets. “Maybe you’ll bring the meanest alpha from another pack and start a war.”

True’s mouth opened, but she was busy thinking. “I never thought of that.”

Hope tapped her temple. “Always thinking three steps ahead,” she said, smiling with a victory grin. “How do you think I’ve stayed so fabulous all these years?”

“Fabulous is in the eye of the beholder, and I’m not beholding,” True replied with a snort of contempt.

“And you’ve gotta stop being so hard on Faith.”

“I can’t help it; it just comes naturally,” True said, snatching up the towel and a glass and polishing again. “I’m just waiting for her to screw up.”

“Well, so far, so…”

“Treasure-hunting Faith,” True sang out, rolling her eyes at the thought of it.

“Is that so bad…?”

“Yes.”

“She’s found a purpose which is keeping her occupied and out of trouble,” Hope said, spraying a table and attacking it with the pent-up energy of guilt over Nana and worrying about what might come next.

“Oh ye of too much Faith,” True replied and frowned. “Why did our parents give us names that come up in normal conversation?”

“To torture us for the evils of childhood we hadn’t yet committed but were inevitable.”

True sighed. “What if Faith screws up?”

“She’s not your responsibility anymore. Faith is a grown-ass woman, she’ll do whatever she does…”

“And I’ll clean up her mess.”

“We will clean up whatever mess happens because that’s what we do. We’re older, and some would say wiser…”

“Nobody I know,” Serendipity said, stalking the back corridor searching for Mr Paws, who seemed to have eluded her – for now.

“I really want to kill that cat, and she does have a few spare lives,” Hope said.

“And I really want to call you a mate; you have a lot of pent-up energy going on, and a mate is good stress relief,” True replied.

“You’re also not going to risk calling me a mate,” Hope said, turning on her heels with fresh energy to finish off the tables and leaving True to nurse the wounds of defeat.

“Well,” True took a breath and slowly released it. “Poop.”
