CHAPTER

3

The Woman

“You're a natural!”Mack yelled as I made my horse go from a slow trot to a gallop, passing him by.

“Oh my God! I love this!" I yelled back at him as I slowed my horse down to a walk, allowing Mack to catch up with me.

“Well I guess we know now that you know how to ride a horse,” he chuckled.

“Yeah, another piece of the puzzle I guess.” I said, feeling sad that I didn't even remember ever learning. Every day I hope that something I come in contact with will trigger some sort of break in my memory lapse, but every day I get nothing but disappointment.

“Hey,” Mack said, stopping my horse with his. “Now don’t you give up. If anyone can figure out who you are it’s those two boys. They are the best in the business at what they do and have a lot of contacts that can help, too. I know that it's hard right now but try not to lose hope.”

Knowing it wasn’t only my memory that I'd been worried about, but the fact that I may never see the two of them again when I did get it back ran through my head too. “How long have you known Vance and Brice?”

“Going on fifteen years now. They hired me when they bought this place and well, I've been with them ever since.” He recalled with a fondness. “I would do anything for those two.”

“I can tell you care for them very much. In fact, if I didn't know any better I would say you were all related.”

“We are a family of sorts, I watch out for them and they do the same for me.”

Thinking of how to ask him the personal question I want to know, I finally just blurted it out. “Do they have anyone special in their lives? I mean... well I've been here a week now and I haven't seen them bring any women home with them, and those two I know have to have a lot of women's attention anywhere they go.”

Chuckling at my question, Mack smiled. “Those boys could probably have any woman they wanted to, but not many women want what they're offering, so it's going to take a very special lady to fill that spot in their lives.”

Confused by him using the word lady and not ladies I asked. “You mean ladies, right? One for each of them?”

Before he could answer we heard Brice yelling his name. “Mack! Where the hell are you?!”

“Over here!” Mack waved back at him as we turned the horses around and headed back over to where he stood. God he was so devastatingly good looking. Tall, dark, and brooding would describe him perfectly, with his five-day shadow, that dark brown hair and those intense black eyes, that could bore into your soul if you stared at them long enough. Those damn tight shirts that him and Vance both wore made it extremely easy to see all the outline of muscles they had underneath. And if I was being truly honest, those jeans they wore did nothing to hide what they were born with either.

“God help me try not to stare.” I mumbled to myself as we got closer to him.

“You know how to ride?” Brice asked as we brought the horses to a stop in front of him.

“Knows how to ride?” Mack said. “She sure as hell does, very well in fact.”

“Really?” Brice held the horses lead, looking me over as I dismounted from the black beauty.

“I loved it! It was so much fun.” I told him, feeling his scorching stare flow over my whole body like it always did the second he saw me. But as usual it turned to ice only seconds later as if he could care less whether I was standing here naked in front of him. He and Vance both did this same routine every time they saw me. Anytime I asked them if something were wrong, they both would make up some lame excuse to get away from me. Maybe I wasn’t their type. Maybe they preferred really skinny blondes. My hair was dark brown, and I did have curves on my petite frame, so I was about as far away from a skinny blonde as you can get. I let out a sigh at my frustration. “You're home early today. Is Vance here too?”

“Yeah, he's inside. We got your test results back and wanted to go over them with you,” he looked pass me to Mack. “Can you tend to the horses?”

Mack nodded. “Of course,” then looked down at me, “It was fun riding with you today, little lady.”

“Thanks, Mack. I hope this means I can help you out more often now that I know I can ride.”

“Anytime you want,” he shouted over his shoulder as he walked the horses into the barn.

As Brice and I headed back to the house, I couldn't help but notice the distance he kept between us. “Everything okay? I mean I'm not dying or something, right?”

Laughing at my question he shook his head. “No, God no. As far as I know all your tests came back fine, but we just wanted to go over the information with you since it is about you.”

“Oh, okay.” I could feel the dread of them probably knowing that I was a virgin now and becoming even more guarded around me than they already were.
