CHAPTER

23

Mr. X

After a couple of daysof not hearing anything from Jackson, I decided to check in to see if he'd found anything.

"Hello?"

"Have you found anything on her yet?"

"As a matter of fact, I was just about to call you. As luck would have it one of our guys was staying at a hotel in Gilmer, West Virginia and thinks he saw her there with two men. I'm on my way there now to see if I can persuade the hotel security staff to let me view the security footage and see if it was really her and Porter with this other guy."

"Hell, why didn't he follow them for us when he thought he saw her?"

"He was with his wife and child, so he opted to call me as soon as he could."

"Damn. Okay, well we all know we can't have our families finding out what we're doing, it would be very detrimental. If it is them, let me know right away, that way I can let Luciano know and he can have his guy help track them. " Hearing a knock on my office door, I knew I needed to end the call. "I have to go, keep me informed." I quickly hang up two seconds before my three-year old granddaughter plowed through the door.

"Gampa! Gampa!" she blurted out, bouncing up into my lap.

"Well hello there, my little beauty queen." I wrapped her up in a tight hug and kissed her cheek.

"Sorry, she just couldn't wait to see you," my son said, walking into the office behind her. "I hope she didn't interrupt anything."

I waved him off. "Nonsense, this little beauty could never interrupt me, isn't that right, bugaboo?" I squeezed her tight again, making her giggle.

"Gampa, I wana sho's you’s dumpting," she said, crawling off my lap and pulling on my hand.

"Okay bugaboo, but let me just talk to your daddy really quick and then I'm all yours, okay?" I looked at my son, who was glaring daggers at me with a coldness in his eyes.

"Otay Gampa," she answered, bouncing back out of the office.

"What is it?" My son asked.

Shutting the door and locking it, I moved over to my desk and sat down. "Didn't you go to school with Keira Watson?"

Sitting in the chair in front of me, he looked at me with suspicion. "Yeah, why?"

"Well I'm sure you heard about her father?"

"How could I not, it's all that's been on the news." He answered in a bored tone.

"I'm just concerned for her is all. I've heard she's been receiving death threats and after what happened to her father, who was one of my close personal friends, I just wanted to reach out to her and offer my services if they are needed, but I haven’t been able to locate her. Have you spoken to her lately?"

He shook his head. "No, and you just need to stay the hell away from her. You're probably the reason her father is dead in the first place, because we all know you don't have any close personal friends, Father."

I shook my head in disappointment. "You are just never going to get over that and forgive me, are you?"

"He was my best friend!" he shouted at me, slamming his fist down on my desk.

"And he was a drunk!" I shouted back at him. "Maybe he should have thought about what his actions would have cost us!"

"He didn't deserve to die and then to just be shoved under your rug with the rest of the bodies." Getting up out of his chair, he headed towards the door.

"Devan?"

Twisting around with a hard look on his face, he snapped out. "What?"

"Can I count on you to keep this just between us?"

"Of course. After all, I want to be around for my wife and daughter. Lord knows you’d probably have me killed without hesitation if I did otherwise, isn't that right, Father?" he walked out of my office, slamming the door behind him, leaving me with the realization of the mess I'd made of his life.
