Really? She was doing that? I gave her a long look. “Just thought I’d stop by on my way home.”

“I could recommend a book or two for you, if you wanted.” Megan’s eyes danced with humor.

She was really putting me on the spot. I didn’t love to read. Everyone knew this about me. And even dating a bookseller wasn’t likely to change it. But two could play. “You know what? Sure. Hit me.”

Megan blinked. “Oh. Okay. Hmm.”

I watched as she furrowed her brow. After a moment, she popped out of her seat. “I’ll be right back.”

I felt Jenna’s gaze on me and turned casually. “What?”

“Not a reader?”

I shook my head. “Everyone knows it. Everyone makes jokes.”

“Well, good for you for giving it a shot.” Jenna blew out a breath. “Noah’s really considering that house?”

“Yeah. Or at least he was on Sunday.”

“I’m gonna go call him. He shouldn’t buy a reno like that without talking to someone who knows what she’s doing. Tell Megan I’ll catch her Friday, okay?” Jenna stood and strode from the store, her long legs carrying her quickly from view.

I couldn’t help but think Noah was in for it.

I also couldn’t help being glad that Megan and I were finally alone.

It took a couple of minutes, but Megan returned with two books. “Where’s Jenna?”

“She ran out to call Noah. I mentioned he was looking at that house.” I reached for Megan’s hand, took it, and tugged.

Megan tumbled into my lap with a laugh.

“That’s better.” I cupped her cheek and drew her close for a quick kiss. “Hi.”

“Hi back.” She leaned away, but stayed on my lap. “I think you’d like both of these. They’re thrillers. One is about a police officer. The other is military. Both are fast paced, edge-of-your-seat stories.”

“Am I going to have nightmares?”

Megan laughed. “No. But if you do, call me.”

“You better believe it.” I took the books and set them on the floor beside my chair, then twined my arms around her waist, locking her in place. “Tell me about this Reuben guy.”

“He’s not a threat. I promise. I can handle it.”

“I never said you couldn’t.” I held her gaze. I believed she could handle it. I did. “I just want you to tell me about him. Okay?”

Megan sighed. “Fine.”

I leaned forward to kiss her. I meant for it to be brief. But, well, it was a little while before she got around to giving me those details about the weirdo.

MEGAN

Nerves danced in my belly as I walked through the bookstore making sure everything was ready. I’d gotten here three hours early, but it had seemed like the better idea at the time. The other alternative had been continuing to lie in my bed, staring at the ceiling, praying that this wasn’t going to be a colossal flop.

After some long conversations with Cody—and the girls, but those conversations weren’t as delicious to remember, so of course I focused on the ones with Cody—I’d taken the plunge. Grandma had always been happy to carry an independently published title, but she hadn’t gone looking for them.

I did.
