She rang the bell and it was opened by who she suspected was Jeff’s girlfriend, Jenna. Not what she expected either.

“You must be Roni. I’m Jenna. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

Roni put her hand out to shake. “You too,” she said.

“Eli talks so fondly of you. I hope Carly does of me at her father’s.”

“That’s good to hear,” Roni said. She couldn’t be nasty to this woman. It wasn’t in her nature and Jenna was being nice. “Eli, give me a kiss. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

“Bye, Mom. Love you,” Eli said.

“Love you too,” she said and watched Eli run down the hall.

She turned to leave and Jenna came out on the porch with her. “I just want you to know that Jeff and I are very serious.”

“That’s nice,” she said.

“And that he’s not going back to you,” Jenna said firmly.

“No worries there,” she said. “You can have him.”

Jenna stopped as if she didn’t believe it. “He said you cause all these problems so that you can get back together with him.”

Guess Jenna had two sides to her.

Roni grinned. She had no choice but to. “Nope,” she said, laughing. This wasn’t worth her time or even the argument. “Have a good night.”

The One In Trouble

Gifts had been opened and there were snacks on the table while dinner was cooking.

Trent was having a beer with his brother and father. The women were drinking wine. Cody and Raina would be here within an hour, he’d been told.

He was going to wait until they arrived to tell his parents but then figured there was no reason for it.

“Mom, Dad,” he said. “Got a minute?”

His mother moved back into the living room and sat down. “Always. What’s going on?”

“I just wanted to let you both know I’m dating someone.”

“You are?” his mother said. He could see she was almost bouncing on the couch.

“I am,” he said. Jonah and Megan were smirking.

“Well,” his mother asked. “Don’t keep us in suspense. Who is it?”

“Who do you think it is?” he asked.

His parents looked back and forth at each other. His father was laughing, his mother flushing. “Well, I don’t know. That is why I asked.”

“You know someone you want it to be,” Jonah said. “Just tell him.”

“What if I’m wrong?” his mother asked.

“Do you think you are?” Megan asked.
