“I guess not. Are you dating Roni? The woman in your building that works for Grant and Garrett?”

“I am,” he said. “And they don’t know a thing about it.”

“Oh,” his mother said, her smile dropping. “Guess that would explain why I don’t know yet.”

“I’m sure you’ve been talking with Diane. No one knows.”

“That’s not true,” Jonah said.

His mother turned her head sharply. “Now you’re in trouble, Jonah,” his father said.

“Yell at him, Jami,” Megan said. “I want to see this.”

“She can’t yell at me if she doesn’t yell at you,” Jonah said. “Or Raina and Cody.”

“Everyone knows but me?” his mother said with her hands on her hips.

“Not everyone,” he said. “Just those four. And Roni’s parents and brother.”

“But you couldn’t tell your parents?” his mother asked.

“Now you’re the one in trouble,” his father said.

“Roni’s family doesn’t know the Fierces. You do. I’m not stupid. I’ve known almost from the time I moved into the building that Roni is who they had lined up. Thankfully, she had no idea.”

“Really?” his father asked. “How is that possible?”

He went on to tell his parents how everything came about with him and Roni. Even down to the day he ran into Eli. He wanted them to know the situation so they were aware of the reason this still wasn’t going to be public knowledge.

“And I know you know Roni has a son. You probably know a lot about her,” he said.

“We didn’t know much,” his mother admitted. “But it does seem to be working out. Are you going to ask me to keep this a secret?”

“I am,” he said. “Until next week. Roni and I are going to the New Year’s Eve party together. Everyone will know that night.”

“No way you are announcing it there,” Jonah said.

“Nope. Just going in as a couple and being together. They are smart. They will put it together themselves.”

“I love it,” Megan said. “No reason to make a production about it, but they will feel like fools for not seeing it.”

“Good,” he said. “Even though we are letting them know, Roni isn’t ready for Eli to know and I’m honoring that.”

“It doesn’t bother you?” his father said. “You’ve met him.”

“I have. He’s a great kid. So funny and I think we’d hit it off. This is more about Roni’s comfort than mine or Eli’s. Jeff has brought women in and out. He’s got a girlfriend now. Roni isn’t sure how Eli will feel about her dating someone.”

“It’s different for mothers,” his mother said. “I think you’re doing the right thing.”

“We are,” he said. “So that is my news.”

“You didn’t say how long you’ve been dating,” his father said. “I’ve got to imagine it’s recent.”

He grinned. “Three months.”

“Three months!” his mother shouted. “Now I feel like a fool.”

“Don’t,” he said. “It’s the way we wanted it to be.”
