She was trying not to dance her way down to her office with her two bosses.

“That was easier than I thought,” she said.

“It always is when it’s a great idea,” Grant said. “Keep them coming.”

Her two bosses left shortly after and she got to work updating the building’s website. She had all the leases of the tenants here too and read them over so she knew the details.

She was updating her spreadsheets with contacts of who she’d be dealing with in each space with another new tenant that signed a lease.

“Roni. I’ve got cookies for you.”

She looked up to see Diane Fierce standing in the doorway with a bag of cookies in her hand. “You do?” she said. “That is very sweet of you.”

“I just stopped and got them at Payton’s deli. I’m going to bring some to Trent and Janine to welcome them into the building.”

“Janine?” she asked, grabbing her pen.

“That’s who works with Trent. I believe she’s a paralegal. I’m sure you’ll meet them both soon.”

“I’ll go up next week and introduce myself to them,” she said. “Grant and Garrett were just here and said he was moving in and furniture had arrived. No reason to bug him if he’s busy.”

“Which is why I’m bringing them some sweets,” Diane said.

“Thank you,” she said, reaching for the bag and looking inside. “There are three cookies in here. Are you trying to get me fat?”

“I thought you could bring one home for that sweet boy of yours.”

“Eli will be thrilled,” she said. “I’m picking him up from daycare today.”

“I’m sure you’re glad to have him for the next several days,” Diane said. “Or have you had him?”

“No, I’m getting him back today.”

“I know it’s hard,” Diane said. “I can’t imagine, but you’re doing what is right for your son.”

She wasn’t one for talking about her personal life, but after she’d been hired, Diane and Carolyn had come in to see her and asked what she’d been doing with her life. Little by little they’d gotten a lot of details out of her and she wasn’t sure how it happened. Maybe she felt comfortable in her life when for years it felt like she was always on edge just waiting for one more bad thing to happen.

“It’s all about Eli,” she said. “I have to remind myself of that.”

“It makes you such a wonderful mother because you know that,” Diane said.

Roni nodded and watched her old middle school English teacher leave.

“Trent,”Diane said, opening the door. “I’ve got sweets for you and Janine to get you through the day.”

“Thanks,” Trent said. “Welcome to chaos.”

“That is how it all starts,” Diane said.

She had to get to work now. A month ago, when Trent reached out about the space, she knew right away that Roni was the perfect match for their next target. She’d volunteered to get the ball rolling and that was what she was doing under the guise of dropping off cookies.

The last she knew, Roni and Trent were both single so it was time to drop some hints and feel them out.

“It is,” Trent said. “We are spending lots of money too.”

“Again, all part of it. I’m sure Janine is enjoying that part. I remember Carolyn and I had a hand in decorating the offices when Grant and Garrett first opened their office building.”
