She hadn’t told her brother about Eli’s other bike at Jeff’s, but she knew her mother would have.

“Eli is fine. Nothing more with Jeff. I just got off the phone with Mom. I wanted to tell you that I’m dating someone.”

“Who is it?” Jax asked.

“His name is Trent Davenport.”

“He’s an attorney, right?” Jax asked.

“Yes. How do you know?” This wasn’t good.

“He worked at the firm that was suing us on behalf of an employee.”

“It wasn’t him, was it?” she asked. Trent never said a word to her about knowing Jax. It’s not like his name was that common.

“No,” Jax said. “I had a meeting there last year. I was waiting with our attorney in the front and heard some loud voices in the back. Someone degrading some staff about making a mistake. Then someone else came out to stand up for that staff and smooth things over.”

Her tension softened. “Was it Trent?”

“I didn’t see his face. I heard the name twice and then before we left, there was some more chatter going on that I caught about Trent was the only one that did that. Stood up for people. This was from two people working at the desk and talking quietly. I’d also heard others in the back trashing Trent. I was curious and looked up the staff on their site while I was waiting and saw his name.”

“Probably Trent’s bosses for standing up for someone,” she said.

“Most likely. I was more inclined to believe the ones that were thankful for his interference. Whether the staff messed up or not, it was the tone of voice and the way it was being handled. Completely unprofessional and uncalled for.”

“That’s why he left and opened his own practice,” she said.

Jax let out a big breath. “I’m going to want to meet him.”

“I’m sure you are. It’s only been a few weeks. It’s nothing serious, but I like him. A lot. He’s crazy busy and my time is limited. I don’t want Eli to know, but Eli has met him.”

“How is that possible if you don’t want Eli to know?”

She told him what she’d told her mother about when Eli ran into Trent in the hallway.

“He was good with him. This was before we were dating. We’d only talked a few times. It was really funny too and then he felt horrible that Eli took off running on him.”

“I’m sure he did. If you’re happy then I’m happy for you. But you know, if Jeff finds out...”

“Jeff has no say in what is going on in my personal life. He’s got someone new in his again. He can’t do or say a thing. Trust me. I’ve got every woman he’s brought into Eli’s life documented.”

“Good for you,” Jax said.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to protect Eli, but I don’t want to start any wars.”

“Most wars are started by bullies, Roni. Remember that.”

“I’m not going to be bullied anymore.”

“That was so much fun,” Eli said on Halloween three weeks later. “Thank you for coming to my classroom and helping.”

“I’ll always do it,” Roni said. “Even if it’s Dad’s day. You know that. Unless you would rather have him do it.”

“He said he won’t. He doesn’t have time and doesn’t want to be the only father on field trips and in the classroom.”
