“No. Jeff is seeing someone again. Eli mentioned the names Jenna and her daughter, Carly. I guess Carly is four. I didn’t ask a lot of questions other than Eli has said twice now that he’s spent time playing with Carly. He complained about it some.”

Jenna was the name Jeff said to her months ago after a few dates. It was like he primed the pump so she wasn’t shocked or something.

Her mother laughed. “Why is that?”

“Because Carly likes dolls and not video games. When Jenna is there she is with Jeff and Jeff isn’t paying attention to Eli.”

“Obviously Jeff can’t balance his life like you do.”

“I’m sure you would argue I don’t balance well since this is the first I’ve dated in years.”

“You’ve got a point, but Jeff has brought at least five women into Eli’s life.”

“He only does it when he’s dating someone for a period of time,” she said. “So my guess is he’s been seeing Jenna for a few months.” She didn’t keep track of the time.

“One good thing he does,” her mother said.

“I have no control over those things,” she said. “Everything Jeff does with Eli can’t be scrutinized.”

“Even though we want to,” her mother said.

She wouldn’t disagree with that statement.

“I just wanted to let you know. I’ll talk to Jax. He’ll be mad if he found out from you. But Trent is a great guy. His sister’s brother-in-law is Ryder Fierce. And Trent’s brother is engaged to Megan Harrington. She works at Fierce too.”

“I suppose that makes me feel somewhat better. He’s not a complete stranger then. Have you talked to Grant or Garrett to see what they know of Trent?”

“No,” she said. “I’m not going to either. They are my bosses. I don’t need them to know I’m dating someone. I’d like to think I’m a good judge of character.”

“You are,” her mother said. “You could have married Jeff when he asked, but you knew in your heart you weren’t ready. By waiting you realized it wasn’t going to work.”

“No,” she said. “It was never going to work out. I tried, but it was draining everything inside of me.”

“We saw it, Roni. You’re a better person and a wonderful mother. Eli knows the right things and when he gets older he’ll see his father for who he really is.”

“That’s the thing, Mom. I don’t want that. I can’t be vindictive that way. That makes me no better than Jeff. It’s my son’s father. I want him to have a relationship with him and if they don’t for some reason, I don’t want to be the reason for it.”

“See, Roni. That’s why you were too good for Jeff. I hope Trent realizes what a beautiful person you are.”

“He does, Mom. I can’t explain it, but I can see it. I just hope that he doesn’t turn out to be someone else later on.”

“Ask yourself this, Roni. What you are feeling for Trent right now? Did you feel that for Jeff a few weeks in?”

“No. But I was twenty. I’m twenty-nine now. I’m not a naive college student. My priorities in my life now aren’t the same as back then.”

“You were forced to grow up much faster than we would have liked for you,” her mother said.

“I didn’t have to do it alone. I don’t think I thank you and Dad enough,” she said.

“You do all the time. I’ll let you call your brother now.”

“I hope he doesn’t give me a hard time,” she said. This call was going to bother her.

Jax had always been protective of her and every time Jeff pulled one of his stunts, Jax wanted to lose the temper he didn’t have for anything in life.

She texted her brother to see if he was around and he called her right away.

“What’s going on?” Jax asked. “Is Eli okay? Don’t tell me Jeff is pulling his shit again. I’m still pissed over what happened this past weekend.”
