“Hi, Mom,” she said around seven. She knew her mother would be relaxing now too.

“Hi, Roni, How are you doing? Is everything okay?”

“Yes,” she said. “Why?”

“You don’t normally call me at night. I call you to check on you.”

Roni sighed. She knew that. If it was bothering her that so many people around her knew her so well, she was keeping it to herself. Maybe it wasn’t that bad of a thing.

“I know. But I wanted to tell you something,” she said.

“What’s that?” her mother asked. “I hope Jeff isn’t taking you back to court or wanting to change the custody agreements again.”

“No,” she said. “Nothing bad or frustrating. At least for now. I think he got enough satisfaction out of the whole bike thing to last him until at least Christmas. He’ll do it again, I’m sure.”

“I’m sure he’ll figure out a way to ruin Halloween for Eli. You know how much Eli loves trick or treating and dressing up and now living there, he’s been talking about the activities they have at the complex that day.”

“He’s going to miss the activities on Saturday. Jeff will bring him back that night. There will be something after six that we can go down to the community center for, but the kids' stuff is earlier in the day. He hasn’t realized that yet. I wish they were happening on Sunday instead but nothing I can do about it. I will have him for Halloween and hopefully that will make up for it.”

“I’m just so mad with the way things have turned out,” her mother said.

“Don’t be that way, Mom. There isn’t anything we can do about it. We get Eli an equal amount of times and holidays. Eli has had to adjust to this for years. When he’s older, I’m sure things will change.”

“I hope so. What is the news you wanted to share with me if it’s not in regards to Eli?”

She almost changed her mind about telling her mother, but she was trying so hard to be positive and maybe it would help her mother see it too.

“I’m dating someone.”

“You are?” her mother said all excited. “For how long? Who is it?”

“Just a few weeks,” she said. “I was going to tell you on Sunday night, but well, you know what happened with Jeff and I just was tired at the end of the day.”

It wasn’t a lie that she was saying. She was tired because of her time spent with Trent.

“I’m glad you’re telling me now. You haven’t dated anyone since Jeff. Have you even gone on any dates?”

“A few,” she said. “I haven’t had time, you know that. And since I lived with you up until a few months ago, you’d know if I was.”

“Did you not date because you didn’t want us to know?” her mother asked.

“No,” she said. “I haven’t wanted to. I’m not sure I was even ready now. I mean if you asked me a few months ago I’d tell you no. This just happened.”

“You didn’t tell me who it was and how you met?”

“His name is Trent Davenport. He’s an attorney that just opened his practice in the building.”

“An attorney,” her mother said. “You detest attorneys.”

“I hear the humor in your voice. But Trent isn’t like that. He moved into the building at the end of June. He was open for business right after the July Fourth holiday. I’ve had a lot of interactions with him and one day he ran into Eli. Or Eli ran into him.”

She went on to tell her mother about what happened that day.

“You must have found him attractive from the get-go,” her mother said.

“I did. But his personality makes him more so. Eli thought he was great, but Eli has no clue either what is going on. I’m nowhere close to telling him. He doesn’t need to know.”

“I understand that. You probably don’t want Jeff to know either.”
