Just Happened

“Hi, Roni,” Trent said, opening the door to her office thirty minutes later. “How are you doing?”

“Good,” she said, putting down the cookie she was eating.

“I see the Fierce women got you some cookies too,” he said.

“They did. They said that they dropped you off a box because you’re almost like family.”

“That’s right,” he said. “I’m sure they are fishing a bit.”

“Fishing for what?” she said. She broke off a piece of the lemon cookie and had another bite. Payton sure did have a hand with sweets.

“Who knows?” Trent said. “It feels like that is all those women do.”

“You’d think they’d have more to do with all the grandkids and being retired,” she said.

“That is what I think, but you never know with them. How have you been?”

“Good,” she said, frowning. “And you?” Didn’t they cover this already? Trent never seemed unsure and yet she could tell that he wasn’t sure what to say or do.

“Good,” he said. “I want to kiss you, but I know I can’t.”

“Not here,” she said.

“You didn’t tell your family yet, did you?” he asked.

“I didn’t. You wore me out on Sunday. You know that. Then yesterday we were together again for dinner and I stopped at the store to get groceries and did laundry. Time got away from me.”

She was going to call her mother tonight. If she didn’t then it’d have to wait until Eli was with Jeff again in four days because she’d be picking him up from school tomorrow after work and there would be no time then. She wouldn’t see Trent either this weekend because Jeff would be coming to get Eli on Sunday night.

“I’d like to get another shot at wearing you out,” he said. “But I know it won’t be until next week if I’m lucky.”

“Sorry,” she said. She hoped this wasn’t going to be an issue.

“Don’t be,” he said. “I’ve got to work late tonight and tomorrow. I’ll be in court all day tomorrow so need to prep tonight and then catch up on work tomorrow.”

That made her feel somewhat better. “I worry that my schedule is going to be an issue.”

“No more than I worry mine will be,” he said. “Don’t think anything of it.”

“Really?” she asked. The last thing she needed was to feel insecure right now about things when this weekend had been so wonderful.

“Really,” he said. “And if you feel needy at night and you are thinking of grabbing your toy, how about calling me instead? Maybe we can try something else over the phone.”

She felt the heat fill her face. “I’m not sure I could do that.”

“I’m pretty sure you can do just about anything you want in life, Roni.”

It was the soft way he’d said that that told her, yes, it could be okay. And that she was going to take it one day at a time.

Which was why a few hours later she was calling her mother once dinner was cleaned up, the rest of the laundry done and put away and the bathroom scrubbed.

When Eli wasn’t around, she found it easier to clean the house more thoroughly.

Or maybe it had more to do with the fact she had so much time on her hands.
