“You’re sounding like a lawyer now. We aren’t doing anything wrong.”

They crossed the hall with their box of cookies and left them with Zander’s assistant since Zander was on the phone.

“At some point we are going to have to tackle him,” Carolyn said. “A friend of Royce’s and single. We might need to start scoping out this building more.”

Diane laughed. “We’ll let the guys know. For now they’ve got their hands full with Trent and the new building. Not to mention they are trying to focus on Gabe and Elise. I believe that’s going to be a rough one.”

Elise was Royce’s sister and she’d put her foot down with her father, Richard, to not even think about getting involved in her love life. That she was onto them.

These kids, they didn’t get it. Everyone said they were onto it, but it still happened.

Since Gabe McCarthy had known Elise for years and it seemed there were fireworks when those two were in the same room, it wouldn’t be much for them to go from enemies and annoyances to each other to lovers.

Until then, they needed to work more on Trent and Roni though and made their way to the first floor.

“Hello, Roni,” Carolyn said, moving into the office. “How are you doing today?”

“Great. How are you both doing?”

“Just wonderful,” she said.

“How are you enjoying your two new grandchildren?” Roni asked.

“Ainsley and Nate are doing great. Jade and Adrianne are also.”

“Nate the Great,” Roni said, smiling. “I heard all about it. Your husbands sure do like to boast about their grandchildren. I saw pictures too.”

“Ainsley is the spitting image of Jade as a baby,” she said. “How is your little man doing? He had a birthday this past weekend, correct?”

“He did,” Roni said. “He turned seven and it’s so hard to believe. They grow fast.”

“They do,” Carolyn said.

“Seems like yesterday I was holding him in my arms and now I can barely lift him for a hug.”

“Treasure those days while you can,” Diane said. “As they grow though, you need to find time for yourself. I know how lucky I was to have Grant with me when the children were off doing their own things with their friends.”

“I’ve been hearing it for years that I need to find time to have a life too,” Roni said. “I’m working on it. But as you said, the kids grow so fast I don’t want to lose one minute of time with Eli.”

“Speaking of Eli,” Carolyn said. She’d have to scold Diane in the car. They seemed to be losing Roni now. “We brought you some cookies and made sure we’ve got a big chocolate chip one in there for Eli. We know how much he loves them.”

“Thank you so much,” Roni said, reaching for them. “I’ll be sure to see he gets it. Were you welcoming Zander to the building like you do everyone else?”

“We were,” Carolyn said. “Stopped in and gave Trent and Janine some cookies too. You know Trent is like family and all.”

“I’ve been told,” Roni said. The phone rang just then. “Sorry, could you excuse me?”

“We’ll let you get back to work now,” Diane said, the two of them leaving.

“She didn’t even blink an eye when I brought up Trent’s name,” she said.

“Nope. And she didn’t latch onto me saying she needs to find time for herself either,” Diane said.

“Janine is right. We need to find another way with this one. I think we need to utilize Janine more to start dropping the other’s name and see how it goes.”

“Which is taking her away from her job,” Diane said.

“Yes, yes. We’ll figure this one out. We always do.”
