“We both had her as a student years ago,” Diane said.

“I believe you told me that. Or your husbands did,” he said.

“She was a good girl. Never getting in any trouble,” Carolyn said.

“Unlike Trent,” Janine said. “I heard he was a troublemaker in school.”

“Just trying to help those in need,” he said. “You know how it is. You find someone that needs a hand and give them a push. Right, ladies?”

This was fun to play with them.

“You think you’re so clever, Trent,” Diane said, narrowing her eyes at him.

“I know I am. I also know what you two are trying to do. Sorry. Go pick on someone else. But I will take your cookies. What did you bring me?”

All three ladies laughed at him. Carolyn handed over the box. “Make sure you share with Janine.”

“She’s mean,” he said. “If I don’t share with her or give her her sugar fix a few times a week she won’t do her job.”

Janine laughed. “You know that isn’t the truth.”

“That’s right,” he said. “She keeps me in line so I can bring the money in.”

“Now thatisthe truth,” Janine said. “Speaking of that. You’ve got a meeting you need to leave for in an hour. Make sure you’re prepared.”

He opened the box that was handed to him, found the massive chocolate chip cookie, thought of Eli and his love for them, and went back to his office.

He wouldn’t be surprised if Roni got her own box too and he’d check in with her before he left for his meeting.

Carolyn watchedTrent go to his office and shut the door. “Well?” she asked Janine. “Anything to report?”

“Not much,” Janine said. “We’ve been so busy I haven’t had much of a chance to go see Roni.”

“That’s great you’re busy, but we need a little push here,” Diane said. “Does Trent ever talk about her?”

“Sometimes,” Janine said. “I bring Roni’s name up now and again. Sometimes I have to call for things here. We decided to have the cleaning crew come in once a week and went to meet with Roni over that. I tried, but she’s a hard one to get a read on.”

“We know,” Diane said. “It’s not easy being in our shoes. Which is why we’ve got cookies for her too.”

“Smart,” Janine said. “Tell me what I should do. I don’t want Trent to get suspicious. I’m not used to being sneaky, but your husbands were in here doing the same thing yesterday.”

“I know,” Carolyn said. “They didn’t get anywhere though. Or they told us they hadn’t.”

“Trent was just leaving when they came in. They introduced him to Zander and he was off to court.”

This should have been easier with Trent and Roni being in the same building, but it didn’t seem so.

“Nothing at all since Roni came in to talk to him about meeting Eli? I know Jami filled us all in too,” Diane said.

“Nothing,” Janine said. “I don’t have the patience like you do.”

“You do need it here,” Carolyn said. “We’ll go over and drop these off for Zander and then stop to see Roni on the way out. Give me your card if you can. If I’ve got anything to report after we talk to Roni, that might help.”

“Now it’s getting good,” Janine said, reaching for her card and handing it over before they left.

They were out in the hall now. “Do you think that is smart?” Diane said. “Putting things in writing?”
