Nope, he was onto the Fierces and had no time in his life to be part of their matchmaking scheme.

“What was that about?” Janine asked when the twins left.

“What was what?” he asked.

“The looks between them and you about not working too hard?”

He laughed. “They think they are being sly, but they aren’t. Let me tell you a story about this meddling matchmaking family.”

Dream Job

“Grant, Garrett,” Roni said. “Good morning. I wasn’t expecting you today.”

“Morning, Roni,” Grant said. “We were just welcoming the newest tenant into his space on the second floor.”

She frowned and hoped she hadn’t messed up. “Davenport Law?” she asked. “They weren’t supposed to be here until next week.”

“Trent is setting up today,” Garrett said. “He’s family of sorts.”

“He is?” she asked in a panic. She should know these things. Not that it’d make a difference in her job. Her dream job she landed months ago. But still, to do her best she needed to know all the information.

Too many times in her life she felt she didn’t have it all and made decisions that others judged.

She’d seen the ad for the position and thought what the heck, might as well apply.

Though she’d loved the job she had at a real estate firm managing the office, she had nowhere to go and didn’t want to get a real estate license to become a realtor or broker.

But she was never going to get ahead and move out of her parents’ house if she couldn’t make more money. She wanted to give her son a better life. One that was closer to what he got with his father.

When she got the call for the interview, she’d had no idea she’d be meeting with Grant and Garrett Fierce. Not that she knew them personally, but she’d had both of their wives as teachers. She’d said that too in the interview. After the words were out of her mouth she wished she could have taken it back, thinking they might assume she was name-dropping.

They’d only laughed and looked at each other with big grins. She wasn’t sure why and didn’t care.

Her second interview was with Walker Olson, Gabe McCarthy and Royce Kennedy and both of the Fierce men again. She’d interviewed here in this office and knew Gabe and Royce came in while taking a break from working in other parts of the building. She hadn’t cared about that. She wasn’t all that formal. Walker walked in last in a suit, but being a lawyer, that wasn’t surprising. It was then she was told that Gabe, Royce, and Walker had other family members in this too, but they weren’t available for the interview.

Everyone was great. No one asked a lot of questions and in the end she got the job.

At first she’d thought it was odd that the other three would interview her when she’d be an employee of Fierce, but then was later told they were partners in this venture and, though Fierce Engineering employed her, she’d have contact with all four businesses and they’d have a say.

If she found it confusing, she just told herself she’d figure it out as it came.

Just like she did most of her life.

“Raina is Ryder’s sister-in-law,” Grant said. Ryder was the youngest of Grant and Diane Fierce’s kids.

“Raina is married to Cody, right?” she asked. She was catching on as best as she could. Carolyn and Diane had been in to see her a few times to chat since she’d been hired. It was so nice to see them again.

“That’s right,” Grant said. “And Megan works in accounting.”

“The one that does all the accounting for this building?” she said.

“Yes,” Garrett said. “Megan is engaged to Jonah Davenport. Raina and Trent’s brother.”

“I’ve got it now,” she said.

She’d add that to her flowchart when they left. She had all the information she could about people in a chart so she knew who had what connection to another. It was always best to know all the players in life. She’d learned that the hard way with her ex.
