At three thirty, she looked up when there was a knock on her door. The sign said out and the door was locked, but anyone could see her sitting there. Plus the lights were on.

She’d seen this guy walk through an hour ago. Her office being by the front door let her see traffic if she was paying attention.

She got up and unlocked the door. “Can I help you? We’re closed today.”

“I know,” the man said. “I’m sorry. I was looking for some guy named Ronnie. I was hoping to leave him a message.”

She grinned at the handsome man in gray shorts that hit his knees and a black T-shirt on that fit him better than it should.

He was tall and in good shape. Maybe a foot taller than her five foot two inches.

His eyes were dark and his hair the same. He had some facial hair action going on and she got the impression it wasn’t normal for him as much as he might have been lazy for a few days.

“I’m Roni,” she said. “A woman. Not a guy. It’s a common enough mistake.”

His hand came out. “Sorry about that. I’m usually better when it comes to those things. I’m Trent Davenport. The newest tenant.”

“Oh,” she said. “Come in. Guess I’m not the only one that didn’t have much going on today.”

“I came from my parents’ not that long ago. A cookout with family, but then I remembered there were a few things I wanted to measure and take care of before tomorrow. My first official open day. Now I need those clients.”

He was smiling at her. A nice sincere one. Not one where he was flirting.

She remembered this was a relation of sorts to the Fierces too. “Congratulations,” she said. “This has to be both scary and exciting at the same time.”

“It is,” he said. “Grant and Garrett told me to talk to you if there are any issues with the building.”

“Oh,” she said. “Is there a problem already?”

“Not sure,” he said. “Well, not with my office. The bathroom. I just went in there and water is dripping out of the sink. I can’t get it off no matter how hard I turn it. I didn’t want there to be an issue since it’s a holiday and all and be a mess tomorrow.”

“Thank you for letting me know,” she said. “Let me just lock the door and go check it out.”

“I’ll go up with you,” he said. “You know, a woman going into the men’s room.”

“I would have knocked first,” she said. She’d gone into enough men’s rooms now, having a son.

He laughed. “I’m just picking on you.”

He was nice. Liked to talk, she could see because as they walked up to the second floor he was just gabbing about the building itself. Maybe he didn’t like silence.

He opened the door to the men’s room. She followed in. “Is it all clear?”

“It is,” he said. “I looked under all the stalls, but it appears no one is on this floor but me.”

“There is still a lot of empty office space here on the other side of the building.”

“With any luck they’ll fill up. It seems they are.”

“They are under contract,” she said. “Construction will be beginning soon.”

“Nice. I keep thinking I could get some potential clients that way. Or at least that is what my family was telling me to do. To get my name out here.”

“I’ve got your cards in my office,” she said. She pulled her phone out and snapped a few pictures and then took a video of the leak. She hated to bug Royce, but she’d have to. It might not be anything or he could tell her how to shut the water off to it for now.

“I know,” he said. “The Fierces took a bunch to bring down the other day. Then I got cookies from Diane.”

“Me too,” she said. “Diane was one of my old teachers. They are all great people.”
