She never thought in her life she’d get to this stage and was happy to say it wasn’t as hard as she feared.

Not once had she talked to Eli about what Jeff may or may not know and Jeff hadn’t mentioned it either. She assumed she would have to tell him at some point. That it was the right thing to do.

“Any plans for tonight?” Trent asked her.

“Not unless you want to do something,” she said. “I know work has been busy for you.”

Trent just hired an accountant and he had more work than he knew what to do with. His caseload was building and he’d gotten another big win a few weeks ago.

Nothing like the one he’d gotten back in the fall, but close to half that, he’d said.

They never talked about money and she didn’t want to. It wasn’t her business and she never wanted him to think she was interested in it.

She was getting on well in her life and had been living on her own with Eli for over a year.

“I never thought it’d be like this so soon. I had hoped when I decided to go out on my own. But the fear of failure is hard to push past.”

“I don’t think you’ve got it in you to fail,” she said.

“Thanks. It’s human nature to feel that way though,” he said.

“If you need to get some work done, go ahead. We don’t need to be doing something all the time. It’s just nice to spend time together when we can.”

It’s not like she was ready to have Trent spend the night with Eli in the house though she knew Jenna was at Jeff’s all the time now.

Not that she asked, but Eli had made comments about it and it seemed as if Jenna might be trying to move in or could at some point.

Her phone rang twenty minutes later when they were sitting down to eat their sandwiches.

“You’re frowning,” he said.

“It’s Eli. He never calls me in the middle of the day. Hello.”

There was crying on the other end. “Mom, I hurt my arm.”

“What’s going on? Where is your father?”

“It hurts and he says I need to suck it up, but it hurts.” Eli was wailing now.

“What happened?” she asked. As a mother, she knew there was more going on by the pain in his voice and she was feeling sick to her stomach. “Can you tell me?”

“I fell off my bike and I landed on my hand and hit my head.”

“Put your father on the phone now,” she said. Her heart was racing. She was glad Eli had his phone to call her because something told her Jeff wouldn’t have let her know.

There was hiccupping as Eli caught his breath. “He’s going to be mad I called you.”

“I don’t care. Do it, Eli. Or I’m coming to get you myself. I’ll deal with your father. You aren’t in trouble. Don’t worry about that.”

There was more crying and she heard Eli say, “Mom wants to talk to you.”

“Why did you call your mother?” she heard Jenna ask. “It’s just a scratch. You’ll be fine.”

“Give me the phone, Eli,” Jeff said. “He’s fine. He fell off his bike. He shouldn’t have been trying to do some jumps.”

“Jumps?” she shrieked. “Why was he jumping on his bike?”

“He said he does them all the time at your place,” Jeff said.
