"I’vealready dealt with him. He owes you an apology." Kane saiddismissively.
"Is he okay?"
"A slightconcussion which will remind him not to drink too much. The bartendershould have cut him off. I’ll have words with him as well."
"He had noright-"
"He had everyright. Kenji is vested both professionally and personally." Aslight smile touched his lips. "He laid into me pretty hard, andhe’s right. I should’ve insisted you leave earlier."
Her eyes flashed. "Ismy work in question?"
"No. You’redoing an excellent job as usual, but you’re pregnant-"
"I will not havehim dictating to me."
"He’staken a personal interest, and you’re not going to shake him,Chantelle. He wants to make it up to you."
"He can't."
Kane inclined hishead, his expression dark. “We’ll see. We have a staffmeeting in ten minutes. I’ll let you get back to work."
Her heart slammedinto her chest when she saw him casually leaning against her door. Hewas wearing his traditional black, this time a thin cashmere sweaterthat fitted his lean frame like a glove.
"I don't havetime for you."
"I just came tomake sure you’re okay." He stood where he was enjoying theview. She was wearing a pin-striped suit, her hair in a smooth bun atthe nape of her neck. She was wearing big hoop earrings, and he justwanted to kiss her.
"I’m okay.Now please go."
"I needed tocheck for myself. Have you eaten?"
Her eyes flashed."I’ve been taking care of myself for years now and prettymuch have a handle on it."
"Good., Have youeaten?"
She wanted to grindher teeth in frustration. "Yes."
"What was on themenu?"
"Are we reallydoing this?"
"It seems weare. What was it?"
Taking deep breaths,she forced herself to be calm. "A vegetable wrap and a pot oftea."
He nodded inapproval. "I need to talk to you."
"No."
He stepped aside tolet her pass and came in behind her as she was about to close thedoor.,
"I’mafraid that wasn’t a request."
