“Hey, I no longer live with him, so he can’t kick me out. Do your worst.” Sam flashed Holly that straight white smile that had all the women in Mistletoe falling all over themselves. “How’s my favorite redhead?”

“If you have more than one, we’re through.”

Sam crossed the room and gave her a lingering kiss on her cheek. “Please, threaten all you want but you can’t quit me.”

“All right, stop messing with me!” Merry grumbled, pushing her way between them.

Holly laughed. “Come on, Merry. If we married brothers, we could get on the cover of a magazine.”

“Whoa, hold up, I’ll be your sugar baby, but this guy doesn’t do matrimony.”

Holly grabbed her purse and jacket from behind the back of the counter before coming around to join them. “Except you’re the elder, so wouldn’t I be the baby?”

Sam slung an arm around her shoulders. “But you make more money than me.”

“Would you two get out of here before I change my mind about holding down the fort? I only agreed because this meeting is for wedding stuff, but I do not want any close proximity romances blossoming.”

“You hear that, Sam? We’ll have to settle for forbidden love.”

“Sneaking around could be fun,” he responded, waggling his brows.

“I hate you both.”

Holly reached out to pat Merry’s cheek. “It’s so sweet how you try to protect me from the big bad wolf. I love you.”

Merry rolled her eyes. “I love you too.”

“No love for me, Mer?” Sam pouted.

“I love you, too, but if you defile my little sister, you’re a dead man. And your brother and Nick will help me hide your body.”

Sam and Holly laughed as they walked out the door, arms still wrapped around each other. It didn’t matter how many times Holly told her that Sam was just a friend, Merry wouldn’t be convinced.

Holly glanced up at Sam, conceding that his sun-streaked blond hair and chiseled jaw were lovely to look at, but she’d never had that spark with Sam. They’d had an immediate connection and friendly, flirty banter, but that’s where they left it.

“You angling for a kiss?” he joked, and she laughed, her face burning.

“Please, you couldn’t handle this fire.”

“You’re probably right. A pretty young thing like you would kill an old man like me.”

“You’re not that old.”

Sam stopped suddenly, right outside of the Mistletoe Hardware window display. “You hinting at something, Holly?”

Holly started, facing Sam, fully aware how they must look to the people inside. Like a couple having an intense conversation.

“No, I was just pointing out facts. Besides, I don’t think of you that way.”

Sam staggered back with his hands over his chest. “I’ve never heard those words from any woman before. I don’t think I will ever recover.”

“I bet if you pulled out your phone and scrolled, there’s someone waiting on there to make it all better.”

“You think? Should we give it a go?”

Holly pushed him lightly, grinning. “Will you stop flaunting your virility and focus? I only have an hour for lunch and we have a lot left to do.”

“All right, boss, let’s get some grub and iron out the details.” Sam fell into step beside her, glancing back at the store.
