“It was all to keep you spellbound and riveted by what I’m saying.”

“Then please continue, because I’m hanging on your every word.”

“When he was on top of me, he kind of stopped and stared at me for a few seconds. I thought he might kiss me.”

“Why would you think that?”

“Because he was hard.”

Merry burst out laughing. “Or his body had a natural reaction to being up close and personal with your body.”

“Fine, but the way he just stopped moving was weird.”

“He was probably embarrassed. Getting a hard-on while trying to thwart your mortal enemy? Brutal.”

“I’m being serious and you’re laughing at me.”

“Come one, sis, you are focusing on something that shouldn’t even matter. You’re not interested in Declan, are you?”

“No, I’m not.”

“Then you shouldn’t be obsessing about this.”

Holly sighed. “You’re right.”

“Why do you say that with so much disappointment?”

Because, Holly thought with a burst of clarity, I think I’m lying about not being interested.

Which was so incredibly twisted. They’d done nothing but bicker and tear into each other, but then there were the moments when Declan smiled, usually involuntarily, or looked at her with those deep-green eyes and her stomach dropped out.

She should either get on that dating thing or convince Declan they needed to bang each other out of their systems.

“Holly?” Merry prodded. “What else is on your mind?”

Holly groaned, dropping her forehead to the counter. “I have to rebrand my social media presence and I don’t think it’s going to go the way I hope.”

“I know I haven’t always been the most supportive of the Adventure Elf stuff, but it’s only because I don’t want you to get hurt. You’ve done some crazy things in the past and I don’t know how you’ve made it through without a scratch.”

“I just don’t know where to go from here without losing all my followers. I need a funny gimmick that is so good people won’t even care that I’m not doing stunts anymore.”

“The prank thing won’t work out?” Merry asked.

“No, I’d have to get everyone’s permission and some people don’t appreciate being the butt of other people’s jokes.”

“It’s too bad you couldn’t cook. You could be the baking elf.”

“Except I burn water.”

“What if you tried different recipes and had a taste tester eat them on camera? Get their reactions. Good or bad.”

“It’s not a bad idea. I don’t know who I’d get for that job, though.”

“Definitely not me, because like you said I’m busy getting married.” Merry danced in a circle with her hand in the air and was in mid-turn when the door opened again and Sam came in.

“Hey, I don’t appreciate Santa calling me a ho. That guy really does see everything, huh?” He grinned, doing a little turn. “And how come no one texted me we were sexy dancing? Get in here, Merry, and let’s get freaky.”

While Holly laughed, Merry rushed her future brother-in-law and punched him on the shoulder. “I’m telling your brother.”
