“I’ll tell the police everything, and I will call Declan. The police will want to interview you later.”

“Thank you for saving him, Drake. All I want is for him to survive.”

“He’ll be fine. He’s a tough guy.”

I hoped so. All these years I had been waiting to find someone true and then when I did, I might lose him.

I had been prodded, x-rayed, and scanned and was now allowed to be transferred to my room. I was exhausted and still waiting for the results, but what I really wanted to know was how Flynn was. My brain was functioning a bit better, and I could hold a thought for more than five seconds. I still had a headache from hell, though.

I lay my head back on the pillow. The painkillers worked to relieve my face and head that felt as if I had just gone a round with a heavyweight boxer.

There was a knock on the door, and Declan, Jack, and Callie came in. I had been holding it together so well and as soon as I saw those faces, I lost it. The tears welled up as Declan and Jack hugged me. I couldn’t stop them. My shoulders heaved with the great sobs.

“It’s okay, it’s all over,” Declan said as he rubbed my hair. It took me back to when we were kids, and I had fallen over or hurt myself.

Lots of tissues later and with lots of hugs from Callie, I managed to get myself under control again.

“Have you heard how Flynn is?” I asked.

“Not yet. They won’t tell us much because we are not family. I called his mother, and she is flying over,” Declan said.

“She is lovely. He is alive. That is all we can hope for right now. You know he told Brad to take him instead of me. I love him, guys. What if he doesn’t make it?” The tears were coming back again.

“He will. He’s an immortal, remember?” Jack said.

The doctor knocked on the door and came in.

“Avery, I’m doctor Baker. I just came to tell you the results of your tests. Are you happy for your visitors to stay?”

“Yes, these are my cousins Declan and Jack, and Declan’s wife, Callie. They are my family here.”

“It’s good news as there is no fracture to your jaw and no internal bleeding with your CT scan. That being said, I would still like to keep you in under observation for a couple of days. You were unconscious for some time and that can lead to complications.”

“That’s fine with me. I don’t have the energy to move right now. I know we are not family, but could you tell me how Flynn Foley is?”

“All I can say is he is in surgery, but they are confident they will have stopped the bleeding. I was told his mother is flying here from Ireland. Is that right?”

“Yes, we contacted her as soon as we could,” Declan said.

That was all I needed to know. I did not care how long it took as long as he was alive.

THIRTY-ONE

FLYNN

Icould hear beeping but struggled to open my eyes. When I did, I looked around to see I was in a hospital. I was alive. There was a nurse beside me checking machines, and I had fluids flowing into me. I tried to lift my head but felt as weak as anything. My right arm was bandaged and elevated. It all came back now. I had been shot. Fuck, my arm hurt.

“Good to see you awake. Are you in any pain?”

“Did someone cut my arm off?”

On a scale of 1-10, what is the pain?

“Ten.” This was like pain I had never experienced before.

“I’ll give you something for it. You are in the recovery ward, Flynn. Your arm has been all stitched up.”

He put something in my drip, and the pain started to ease. I wore an oxygen mask but still felt like every breath was a struggle.
