She squeezed my shoulder. “You know that you have nothing to worry about. Doctor Collinsworth is a wonderful surgeon. You saw what she did for Brook.”

I nodded, once more thankful of my friendship with Brook. Although I hadn’t known her for long, she had gone out of her way to help me through this most difficult time. Not only had she set me up with her mentor, Katrina, but she had set up my upcoming reconstructive surgery and even intended on paying for the entire procedure.

“Besides,” Katrina said as she grabbed a dishtowel and picked up a coffee mug. “You’re going to have a wonderful time recuperating here in Dallas. I’ll show you the best of what this city has to offer. That’ll keep you busy for a good long time.”

I smiled. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Chapter 11

Tuesday

A Week Later

––––––––

I STARED AT MY NEW face. It had become my obsession. Not out of vanity, but out of pure curiosity and wonder.

The days after my surgery had been painful and filled with stress. What would I look like? The scars, the burnt flesh... how would the surgeon make it all look good again?

On the day of the reveal, sitting on the examination table with Katrina holding my hand tight, I’d nearly fainted as Doctor Collinsworth had removed the bandages. I’d seen the look in Katrina’s eyes... concern, worry. Where was the elation, the joy, the marvel at my new beauty.

“What?” I’d whispered as I’d instinctively reached out to touch my face. “What’s wrong?”

“Everything is fine,” Doctor Collinsworth said as she stilled my hands.

I looked at Katrina for confirmation but got none.

“I want to see,” I said. My heart pounded as if it wanted to break free of my body. I shook. Did I want to break free from this body? This body that was now so different from the one I’d known all my life?

Doctor Collinsworth put a calming hand to my shoulder. “You need to understand that...”

“I want to see!” I was overtaken with panic. And while I regretted shouting at her – she’d been nothing but sweet and patient with me – I was prepared to scream my head off if I didn’t see my new face.

“All right.” She calmly turned and reached for a hand mirror. “Here you go.” She set it face down on my lap.

I immediately reached for it, but she set her hand over mine.
