Tuesday

I blessed the day I met Brook. Being the new girl on campus had been stressful and befriending Brook had been a Godsend.

The day of the explosion was still a blur, vague and foggy. At times I truly wanted to remember more about that day, but other times, I wished to forget it completely.

“Are you still with me, Tuesday?”

I turned away from the kitchen window and turned to the sound of the voice and smiled. Katrina Colloway, a beautiful and elegant friend of Brook’s had taken me in... another unexpected blessing.

“Off in daydream land?” she said.

I nodded as I set the dish that I’d washed in the dishrack.

“Brook told me that you were bright and bubbly...the most cheerful person she’d ever met,” she said. “I didn’t expect someone so solemn and introspective.”

I’d been at Katrina’s house for just over a week and was still adjusting to my new surroundings.

“It doesn’t show now,” I said. “But deep inside here, that bright and bubbly girl is still there... somewhere.” My voice had become deep and raspy since the fire... far from the shrill feminine voice of that bubbly girl.

She put her hand to my shoulder. “I have no doubt that I will one day see the real Tuesday.”

I smiled, wondering if the real Tuesday would ever return. I didn’t want to become angry and bitter... but... I felt it... growing, deepening and taking root.

“Brook said that you worked at Neiman Marcus,” I said, wanting to change the subject.

“I do,” Katrina said with a grin.

“You must get a good discount.”

She simply smiled.

“Must be interesting.”

Katrina remained silent for a long while. “Are you nervous about tomorrow, honey?” she finally said.

I plunged my hands into the hot and sudsy water, resting my palms on the bottom of the kitchen sink. Hanging my head low, I nodded, fighting back the stinging tears.
