He fucked me faster, deeper, making us hotter. The blaze too hot, the pleasure too much to resist, I went up and over the edge. Stiffening, he groaned, planted his cock deep, and went over with me.

Climaxing, we rode mutual releases together that were so strong, they robbed us of breath. We came down, gasping for air.

As he wrapped his arms tight around me, a few hot tears slipped from my eyes. He was it for me. There was no denying it.

In dance, I found escape. With him, I found a harbor. A safe haven.

A place to belong.

“WHAT ARE YOU doing?” I stepped off the last stair, keeping my tone even, though my heart was hammering after waking up and finding Electra gone.

“Turning lights on.” She withdrew her hand from beneath the glowing lampshade.

“Why?” I asked, moving toward her. “Why are you awake?”

Did she have a nightmare? I remembered her mentioning them.

“My dad always left lights on at night so we could find our way home in the dark.”

She gestured, and I could see that she’d turned on the outdoor lights. They were set by timer to go off at midnight. It was well past that now.

“I leave them on at the apartment too. I know it’s not energy efficient, but ...” She trailed off, looking unsure.

I wanted her steady and sure. “Then do it here too.” Reaching her, I swept her into my arms.

She leaned into me like I was as necessary for her peace of mind as she was for mine. My heart warmed, the pace of the panicked beats slowing.

“What made you think of them?” I asked.

“I’m nearly always thinking of them,” she murmured and glanced up at me.

“Of course you are.” I curled my finger under her chin, wanting to look at her, wanting her eyes to stay on mine.

“You don’t think that’s weird?” She wrinkled her nose.

“You loved them,” I said. “They loved you. No, I don’t think it’s weird.”

“Do you think they still love me?” Her lip trembled. “Do you think where they are that they know what I do?”

“I think they’re proud of you like I am,” I said firmly. “I think a strong love like you shared with your family never dies.”

“I believe that too.” Her eyes glistened, twinkling brighter than the north star. “I don’t just put on the lights because my dad did. I do it because I hope that wherever he is, wherever they are, that they know I’m thinking about them, that they are welcome to come near.”

Her explanation tugged at my heart. Gathering her hands and bringing them up, I laid them over my heart. It beat for her.

“Do you want to go back to bed, or would you like to stay up and talk some more?”

She glanced down at our joined hands, then up at me through her sooty lashes. “I think I’d like to talk a little longer.”

“Then let’s sit down.”

I led her to the couch. Releasing her hand, I found the remote and turned on the gas fireplace. The temperature had plummeted during the night, and it was chilly downstairs.

“I want you to feel free to talk to me about anything.” Sitting, I caught her gaze and held it. “I might not always say or do the right thing, but I’ll listen and help if I can.”

I scooped her off the cushion she’d perched on and put her on my lap instead.
