“Well, I can’t blame her. You are impossible to get over. I couldn’t do it.”

He leaned over and kissed me. “I love you. I will get to the bottom of this. Don’t worry. You have a great day. I’ll try to get home a little earlier tonight and if I find out anything I’ll call you.”

“Thanks, honey,” I said.

Mason left and I was alone with Jack, who was upstairs still trying to get dressed. I went upstairs to help him out. He had to get breakfast and get to school pretty soon.

As I helped Jack get ready, I thought about Tiffany and how deranged she would have to be to think that she really had a shot at getting back with Mason. Of course, she wanted her family back and she was the type of person who would not take responsibility for her actions. That was not that farfetched.

I got Jack off to school ok and then came back to Mason’s to work on some music. It felt weird having so much time to do that now. I was making great money as a nanny, but Jack was in school half the day and the rest of the time his care was pretty minimal. It was then that I realized that Mason paid me so much because he really had fallen in love with me at first sight. And when the idea came about for me to suggest becoming Jack’s nanny, he jumped at it for the same reason that I did.

I tried to focus on the music I was working on, but that thing with Tiffany (if it was her on that phone) kept messing with me. As much as I tried to tell myself that I held my own and I wasn’t at all frightened by this, the whole thing had thrown me off balance. I just didn’t want to deal with something this annoying. If this girl came for me in any way she’d be the sorriest bitch who ever lived. I was not the woman you wanted to fight. But what if I didn’t see her coming? I knew nothing about her? And I didn’t really know all that much about Tiffany. She was something of an enigma to me. I only knew what Mason had told me and a lot of that was vague.

I wasn’t about to let some idiot try to push me out of Mason’s life. It wasn’t going to work. It wasn’t going to happen. I was going to be with him. I loved him and he loved me. I thought he might actually propose to me one day. That was something I’d been thinking a lot about lately.

I would say yes in a heartbeat. I knew it. I would not be able to control myself. I had to have him. He was just the perfect man for me. I loved him. I loved Jack. I wanted this. I was made to need this. It felt like Mason and I were literally created to find each other. It was a sappy sentiment and I’d never been much into that stuff, but lately I’d been feeling exactly that.

I worked all morning and then decided to order a pizza for lunch. I was starving. I wasn’t sure why, but the past week or so I’d wanted to eat everything in sight. The pizza tasted good. I ordered a large and finished every crumb. After that I was still hungry, so I washed all that down with some Taquitos that I popped in the microwave. I’ve always thought that pizza and something with a Mexican flavor tastes amazing when eaten together.

I kept feeling uneasy as I tried to relax a bit before I had to pick up Jack from school. I kept having the feeling that I was being watched somehow. It was a silly way to feel. I knew I wasn’t being watched, but I just couldn’t be too sure. I kept going to the windows and looking out hoping that I would see what was making me feel this way, but I saw nothing out there each and every time I checked.

I was spooking myself out. That damn phone call had achieved its mission of riling me up and putting me on edge. Fuck. I had to get a grip. There was no way I was going to let some idiot ruin my day and the way I felt. I would not be scared.

I would not be a victim.

Chapter 15

Mason

“That fucking bitch!”

I screamed at the steering wheel as I drove. I pounded on it and I tried to resist the urge to slam the car into a brick wall and destroy it. I was so angry. This was not right. Now that bitch was trying to ruin the best thing that had ever happened to me besides Jack being born. I couldn’t believe she’d stooped that low, but then again it was Tiffany.
