Me

Hey. Sorry, I’ve been busy. Absolutely! Are you able to chat this week?

Zach responded before my screen dimmed.

Zach

Thought you were blowing me off. Always free for you. When works for you?

A stupid little flutter flapped around in my stomach that I willed away.

Don’t overthink his words, Jessa. That won’t do you any good. He’s just being kind. He’s just being kind.

Me

Would tomorrow work?

God, I could see the insecurity in the three words I had typed. Three little bubbles popped up, dancing around as Zach typed out a response. I stared at those little dancing dots, waiting to see what he was going to say.

But they disappeared.

I frowned, unable to hide my disappointment, even from myself, when I received a long message from him.

Zach

Tomorrow would be perfect. I have practice in the a.m., so afternoon would be best for me. I’m thinking we grab a coffee somewhere. Do you have a preference? And I’d like to know what you order, so I have it ready for when you get there. I’ll be early, eagerly awaiting your arrival.

Was that…sweet, or kind of weird? Was that normal? Why was I staring at the message, reading it over and over, and not responding?

Me

There’s a café near the office that makes the best lemon scones. We could meet there around 1 p.m.?

Zach

Sounds great. Drink order, Jessa. And the name of the café, so I show up at the right one.

Me

Oh, right. Um…I like green tea with honey. It’s called Crimson Café.

Zach

Is this where I’m supposed to say see you tomorrow and stop texting? Because I’ve been waiting for this message for far too long to want it to end now.

Me

Technically speaking, yes.

Zach

I’d rather not. Tell me about your day.

I gazed down at the message and decided to play it cool. Aloof. Not overshare.

Me

Day is going well. And you?
