Zach

Details, Jessa.

The details weren’t interesting. The details were depressing, and not something I really wanted to get into with him. He seemed like he had a hero complex, so if I told him that the program was about to come to an end, the program that had shaped him into the man he was…

Me

I looked at the budget, I processed applications, and I’ve been avoiding a phone call from a parent that doesn’t like me.

Zach

I’ll answer for you.

Me

Please, go right ahead. She’s rude.

Zach

I’ll win her over. She’ll be your biggest fan. Well, after me, of course.

That stupidflutter.

I couldn’t like him. Ishouldn’tlike him. That would get me into a situation I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted. He traveled often, he’d meet girls who were obsessed with riding hockey player’ssticks…and he’d forget about little old me. I was boring. I even bored myself.

Me

That’s the first time you’ve lied to me, Zachary.

Zach

I would never lie to you, Jessa.

Me

Never?

Ugh.

I placed my phone face down on my desk, ignoring it when it vibrated almost instantly. I clicked around on my computer, filing emails into perfectly categorized folders, and printed more applications that had streamed in thanks to the looming deadline.

I answered the call from the crappy parent, told her all the things she already knew, and informed her that no, we would not extend the deadline for her just because she’d been on parental leave and didn’t file her taxes on time.

I organized the files on my desk and did all the boring things I had been putting off, just so I wouldn’t have to look at the message from Zach. It was stupid of me to say that, and it made me sound needy. I wasn’t needy. I wasn’t needy…

Was I?

With a huff, I flipped over my phone and stared at the message Zach had sent in response to my silly little word a few hours ago.

Zach

Never. I mean it.

Damn it.

I wanted to see him. Why did I want to see him?

I shook the foolish thoughts away and pulled up the database, typingRenshawinto the last name category, waiting what felt like an eternity for it to pull up the records.
