I shook my head. “Rather not push her away any further. She’s like an animal in the woods. You need to approach slowly and show you’re not going to hurt them, or they run.”

“I don’t care,” Rook stated.

“You’re an ass,” I grumbled. “Now get in, or I’m leaving you here.”

CHAPTER7

JESSA

Checkingthe numbers for the third time, I leaned back in my chair and blew a sigh towards the ceiling tiles.

Power Play had $2,754.93 left in the budget to make placements. We would enter the new year without a carryover, and we’d have to start from scratch with fundraising.

Everything we were doing was no longer working. Our current fundraisers pulled in less and less each year, and the events always seemed to fall through at the last minute due to a lack of volunteers, not enough interest, or some other pitiful reason.

It was like everyone had forgotten about Power Play. The program used to have a surplus of funds remaining, entering the new year with a twenty-thousand-dollar carryover. They had so much equipment, they didn’t know what to do with it all.

I didn’t want to tell Andrew that there was evenlessto use for placements this season, so I saved the budget document I had created and closed it.

I reached for my phone and sent a text to Ali.

Me

It’s even worse than we thought.

Ali

What is?

Me

The budget…

Ali

Oh! Right. Sorry, sunshine. That sucks.

What about hockey boy? Could he help?

Me

Don’t think so.

Ali

Wouldn’t hurt to ask. ;-)

Me

Go away, I have work to do.

Ali

You texted me!

I closed the message from my roommate and scrolled down to the message from Zach I hadn’t answered. I hadn’t even saved his number in my phone.

Saving his number asZach – AHL,I navigated back to the message and read it again. Then again. Then I typed out a response and sent it before I could second guess myself.
