I want to burst out into tears. How the hell is everyone else keeping it together after what we just heard?

"I will take that into consideration, Mr. McDonagh. Thank you for sharing that with us." She turns to the suit. "Do we have anything else to discuss?"

"No, that is it," he replies. "Thank you both for coming."

I stand up with Logan, and I have no idea whether or not we are still in the running. I have no idea whether Good Relations is still in the running. And I have no idea what I should do about the job offer.

We leave the room together. We then stand in silence and wait for the elevator. When it starts to descend, I have to break the silence.

"I didn't know about your mother," I say.

"I have told almost no one about her."

"Is… is that why you were so hesitant to start a family?"

"I am sure that is part of it," he responds. "I don’t know if I will be a good father to a child. I know business, but I cannot claim to know people."

"I think you do okay."

"I still have her manuscript."

"Manuscript?" I ask.

"I found it after she passed. I don’t know when she wrote it or what she intended to do with it, but I think it is really good."

"You have a manuscript your mother wrote? Like a book?"

"Yeah, she wrote a novel about a mother and a son and… well, it ends differently to how her life ended. She wrote the ending that fate would take from her. If she had not gotten sick, she might have… it does not help to think about it actually."

"I'm sorry."

I wrap my arms around him, and he stands stock still for a moment before he hugs me back. It still feels like he is holding back emotions. He doesn't shed a tear, but I know he is hurting.

"I thought about having it published, but I cannot. I constantly worry that it is not as good as I think it is. I could not bear it if I submitted it and it was rejected."

"Every good book is rejected before it is not."

"I know, but I still cannot do it. I want to cling to hope. I am not ready to let it go just yet."

I wrap my arms around him once more. "You will when you are ready."

The elevator pings, and the brief moment of magic, our journey from the top floor to the bottom, comes to an end.

"I guess this is where we separate for now," I say.

"We will talk soon and figure out the next steps once I hear from Miss Morton's team."

"How about I call you when I find out? I'm supposed to have dinner with her next week."

"Yeah, all right."

"Hey, I can read it if you want someone to give you a second opinion."

"The manuscript?"

"Yeah."

Logan sighs. "I don’t know if I am ready for that yet. However, if I do let someone read it, it would be you. Thank you."
