She looked up at the house that my dad had gotten the address for, then at me, back at Crew, then at the baby in her belly, and shook her head, but then her phone pinged with a text, and I saw her smile, then she said, “No. I’ve got all the family I need.”

I asked, “Who had you smiling, sweetheart?”

“My big brother,” was all she had to say.

I only had to say one name, “Marcus.”

I smirked, “What’d he say?”

She smiled again, “That if they made me cry, to give him time to get on a plane and he would be here.”

I laughed then and started the car, but not before we saw a woman, a man, and two older boys step out with their hands holding two other women, and five kids following them.

“Who is that, Mommy?” Crew asked from the back seat.

I let her have the lead on this.

She shrugged, “I think that’s my family.”

Aliyah never lied to Crew, she never kept things from him either, I knew that, and it was proven true when he asked, “They gave you away, right?”

Aliyah swiped at a tear on her cheek and nodded, “Yeah, booger butt, they did.”

“Then why are we still sitting here? Let’s go home,” Crew said as he took his eyes from them and leaned to look out of the windshield.

I had my marching orders, so I took our family home.

It wouldn’t be until two months later, while we were out at dinner in Cali with our blended family, that we finally got some answers.

Our families had flown out with us, because Marcus and I had toured the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

I had just taken Crew’s straw from the wrapper and put it in his lid for his soda that it happened.

A man that had been walking by us, said, “Oh, my god. Rebecca, get over here.”

I looked at Marcus and then we both gritted our teeth.

“You’re… you... I can’t belie… oh my god. And you… you’re… fuck me. Campbell and DuPointe. Can I please have y’all’s autographs?”

I turned my head to tell him that no, he couldn’t. That we were out with our family, but as I got a look at his face, then at hers, I turned my head back, wrapped my arms around Aliyah, and hauled her into my lap.

She buried her face in my neck and muttered, “What’s going on?”

“We’ve seen them one time from a distance,” that was all I needed to say as her whole body tensed up.

Then I looked at Marcus and shook my head.

He narrowed his eyes, then he looked over my head at them and simply said, “No.”

“But… but the two of you are my biggest fans! Luke, Connor, look who this is. I can’t believe our luck.”

Crew snapped then, stood in his chair, put his hands on his hips, and said, “My Uncle Marcus already told you no. And no means freaking no. Now leave us alone.”

Pride. Nothing but pride swarmed in my belly for that boy.

I let go of Aliyah with one of my arms and wrapped it around Crew.

The man begged, “But, please. I’ve wanted to meet the two of you since your story aired. Please.”
