Then Crew asked, “Who hit you?”

Braydon looked down at Crew and said, “Marcus.”

Then Crew let go of my hand, stepped around Daemon, and then held his arms up for Marcus to pick him up.

But my eyes were locked on Daemon’s. And I could’ve sworn that I literally just watched his heart break in two.

The sorrow. The regret. The guilt. It was all written clearly on his face.

Then after Marcus whispered something to Crew, he placed him down on his feet, and Crew walked back around Daemon, but stopped, looked up at him, and said, “I wanted you to be my dad. But now, I’m not so sure. Because my dad never would’ve thought my mommy could ever do something like that.”

And with that, Crew held his hand out to me, and I didn’t hesitate to place mine in his, and together, we walked to the daycare center doors with our heads held high.

And for the rest of the day, in every class, someone from the football team brought me something from Daemon.

Hot cocoa in the morning.

Red Swedish fish.

White chocolate peanut butter Reese cups.

A can of my favorite soda.

And finally, a bouquet of flowers and a jersey for me.

I also found out that the entire team hung out with Crew, and he paid no attention to Daemon, the coach, or Braydon.

It was Saturday and today was the last game to determine who would be playing in the playoffs, and we were closer to see who would be the final two in the championship game.

We had just finished eating breakfast when Crew asked, “Are we going to the game tonight, Mommy?”

Before I could say anything, my phone rang.

When I saw it was Marcus, I answered, “Hey.”

“Hey, Lil Mama. I don’t have a lot of time. I’m sending you two videos. He’s fucking sorry. Watch them. Please.”

So, once they loaded, Crew and I sat on my couch and watched the two videos. And then we watched them four more times.

Then I looked at Crew, “Do you want to go to the game?”

He bit his lip. Then he nodded, “Yeah. We have to cheer for everyone. Except for Braydon.”

I chuckled at that.

Two hours later, with Crew’s hand in mine, we headed to our seats.

Once we were in them, we both sat back and got comfortable. What I didn’t know was that Matthew had been on the lookout and the moment he saw us, he had relayed it to Daemon.

They started the music for the team to step onto the field, but it was different.

They didn’t run onto the field, no, each of them walked to it, in a single file, and then stopped. Turned to face the home side of the stadium and then the music stopped.

I looked at Crew, who looked up at me and asked, “Mommy, what’s happening?”

“I don’t know, baby,” I said to him.

And that was when I saw that every single player dropped to a knee and all of them had their eyes on a player walking to the middle of the field with a microphone in his hand.
