Marcus moved with me, and then she closed the door.

That was when we heard, “Mommy, I can’t find it.”

I heard her growl and snickered, then I placed my hand on her hip, “What is it?”

She huffed then sighed, “His other sock.”

I winked at her, then gestured to Marcus, “Baby, this is my brother from another mother, Marcus. Marcus, this is Aliyah.”

She nodded, then held out her hand for Marcus to take, he shook it and then said, “Honor to meet you.”

Aliyah offered him a soft smile, “You too. Welcome to our home.”

I left them to talk then headed to Crew’s room to hear him mumbling as he dug for something from his drawer, “I want to look my best. We’re taking Daemon out.”

I grinned at that, “Hey buddy, what’re you looking for?”

He spun around, then he teared up, “Dang it.”

I walked over to him and knelt down, “Hey, why are you upset?”

“I wanted to be ready for when you got here. Have to make a good impression.” This boy. Fuck.

“So, how can we fix that?” I asked him.

“I need my other sock.” Looked to me he had plenty of pairs.

But I didn’t say that, instead I asked, “Why?”

“Because… they look good with this outfit.”

I nodded, “What shoes are you wearing?”

Then he walked over to his closet and pulled out a pair of boots.

Something occurred to me then. I had on boots when I came over after the game, and I felt him slip his little fingers into my heart and tear a hole open. “Were you trying to look like me?”

He nodded bashfully.

So, I did the only thing a man could do at this point. I sat down, pulled my boots off, then pulled off my own socks, and stuck my feet back in my boots, “There. Fixed. Get your feet in your boots, and all you need is a black ball cap.”

“I don’t have one of those,” he muttered.

So, I shrugged, “Easy fix. I got another one in my truck.”

“Okay, are you ready?” He nodded after he had his bare feet in his boots, and then his little hand found its way into mine.

And I’ve never felt so tall in all my life.

As we walked down the hall, I heard Aliyah laughing at something Marcus had said.

She whipped her head around and then looked the two of us over. She opened her mouth to say something, then closed it when she caught the socks in my hands. I looked down at Crew, winked, then I looked at her, “We are going sockless tonight.”

Marcus shrugged, and then he too, did the same thing I did.

I looked at Marcus and then looked down at Crew, “Crew, this is my best friend, Marcus. Marcus, this is my buddy, Crew.”

Marcus, being the big-hearted bastard he was, knelt down in front of him, and held out his hand, “It truly is an honor to meet you, Crew.”
