“You have to admit you cheated,” I said to her when I caught up to her.

“No I didn’t,” she said, a look of indignation on her face. “I won fair and square.”

“Let’s do it again then,” I said.

“Nope, you’ll just find some way to cheat,” she said, laughing at my hurt expression.

She looked beautiful, her eyes twinkling with mirth as she looked around the pool area, which is absolutely beautiful, with smooth, polished concrete walls and a deep blue color that shimmers softly. It's surrounded by a spacious wooden deck, which is dotted with comfortable outdoor furniture that's perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun or gazing up at the moon and stars.

“I wouldn’t need to Alex. You'd already be enough of a distraction in that bikini,” I said running my eyes boldly down her body.

“That’s the worst one yet,” Alex said laughing at me.

“You think you can do better?” I asked her.

“I don’t have to. Like you said, this is good enough already,” she said winking suggestively up at me, her, her eyelids heavy as she ran her eyes over my body slowly. No way she wasn’t doing that on purpose. No damned way at all.

I put my hands on her waist and pulled her to me, her body fitting perfectly against mine. Holding her close, I latched my lips to hers with a soft groan. I kissed her softly, uncertain of what her reaction would be. She hesitated for a moment, her body stiff, and then she gave a little moan and opened her lips.

I pushed my tongue in, my body reacting immediately to the taste of her lips. Alex must’ve felt me thickening against her legs because she trailed her hands down my body and rubbed her hands against me through my shorts, her hand softly brushing my tip. I kept up the kiss, my tongue dueling with hers, her lips soft against mine.

Alex pulled away suddenly, her lips pink and swollen after our kiss. She looked uncertain.

“Maybe this isn’t such a hot idea Christian. We have enough going on without compounding our problems,” she said quietly.

“What are you scared of? It can’t get any worse than this,” I told her, my body fired up even more from her resistance.

She laughed wryly. “Oh it could definitely get way worse than this,” she said, swimming to the edge of the pool and stepping out of the water. I watched silently as her long legs carried her away from the pool, up the steps, and into the house.

That wasn’t supposed to end that way. Alex and I had been flirting steadily the whole trip, but maybe she was right, and it wouldn’t be a good idea to take it any further. I'd had found myself missing her presence while at my meetings, remembering her smiles and craving the feel of her hot body against mine.

None of this had been part of the plan, but I couldn’t make myself regret any of it. I wanted to pretend for a little while longer, just until we made it back to Miami.

Maybe she’s playing you, same as she did your brother. There it was, one reason i couldn’t let myself go completely. Maybe this was just part of the bet for her. Maybe she didn’t give two figs about me, and was just using me to keep the wool over her friends' eyes. And I wasn’t any better. If my mom found out the truth, I’d be a dead fish in the ocean.

I swam out of the pool and went upstairs, drying myself with a towel. This wasn’t the best time to get involved in a relationship, especially not with Alex, given our long history of mistrust and feuding. It would be a terrible idea, but I couldn’t deny the allure.

Tomorrow we would be flying back to Miami, and it was just as well. Things were getting muddled, lines were blurring, emotions changing. We had to get back to our regular lives, which meant keeping up the pretense. It irked me to call it that, but until we settled on what we were, that was all it could be.

Chapter Ten

Alex's POV

I arrived at the entrance of my new job a bundle of excitement and nervousness. It was my first day as social media manager, and I want to make a good impression. The building was a tall, contemporary glass structure that stood out amongst the surrounding brick buildings. The cool air hit me as I entered the lobby, and I was momentarily blinded by the brightness.

The first thing I noticed was the sheer size of the place. The ceilings were high, and the lobby stretched out before me. The walls are painted a light blue color, and the white marble floors gleamed. Seating areas where employees could relax, socialize, or work were scattered about. The furniture was sleek and contemporary, with black leather chairs and couches and small tables with magazines and newspapers.

It was spacious and current, with a massive glass window offering a stunning view of the Miami skyline. The walls were decorated with vibrant paintings and photographs of the company's products. I could feel the energy and buzz of the place, and it was infectious. I approached the reception desk, where a friendly-looking man greeted me with a smile.

“Good morning," he said. "How can I assist you?"

"Hi," I replied, trying to match his friendliness. "I'm Alex Grey, and I’m here to see the Mr. Michael, the director of marketing."

After confirming my appointment he said, "Ah, yes. Welcome to our company. You must be excited. Take the elevator to the top floor to Mr. Michael's' office. He's expecting you."

He handed me a small plastic badge with my name and photo, which I clipped onto my blouse. He pointed me to the elevators. The doors opened, and I stepped inside the spacious, gleaming elevator, my heart pounding in anticipation. I took a deep breath. This was it. The moment I'd been waiting for.

I press the button for the top floor, and the doors slide shut, the elevator beginning its ascent.
