Christian’s POV

I sat in the plush armchair, swirling my scotch, and looked out the towering windows of Nathan’s opulent office. It was a stunning space, full of leather, polished wood, and artwork that was probably worth more than most people's homes.

I'd known Nathan for years, and as I waited for him to arrive, I couldn't help wondering what was on his mind. He was usually so sure of himself, so confident. But when I talked to him earlier today, he sounded a tad worried.

When he finally walked in, I raised an eyebrow. He looked worried too, almost agitated.

"Hey, man. You okay?" I asked, taking a sip of my drink.

Nathan settled on the couch, which had been placed against the wall to create a lounge effect. He looked both excited and nervous.

"So, I wanted to talk to you about the wedding. Sophie's made her decision about the maids of honor." He said hesitantly, looking out the window.

I felt my stomach clench, knowing what was coming.

"And?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even.

"She's chosen Alex," Nathan said, a hint of apology in his voice.

My grip tightened on the glass, and I felt the heat rise in my chest.

"Alex?" I asked, the name leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. “You can’t make me your best man and let Sophie keep Alex, how exactly would that work?”

Nathan shifted in his chair, looking uncomfortable.

"Yeah, I know you don't like her, but Sophie really wants her to be a part of the wedding party."

The same Alex who ruined my brother’s life and had the nerve to walk away without a second thought.

I leaned back in my chair, trying to keep myself calm. "Nathan, do you remember what she did to my brother?" I asked my voice low.

"Of course, I remember. But that was a long time ago. Can't you try to let it go for the sake of the wedding?"

I shook my head, feeling the anger rising inside me.

"I can't just forget what she did. She destroyed my brother."

I'd never forgive her for what she did, and the mere thought of having to see her again made my blood boil. The memory of my brother's pain was fresh in my mind, and I couldn't bear the thought of having anything to do with her.

“You’re my friend Christian and I love you, but if you ruin my wedding with your bickering, I’m cutting you off,” Nathan said firmly.

"I'll try," I said, my voice strained.

“Thanks, man. I appreciate it."

I hoped I could get through the wedding without any major blowouts, but deep down, I also knew it would be difficult. Keeping my feelings under control was going to be hard work.

As I left Nathan's office, my thoughts were fixed on Alex and what she'd done to my family. After she broke up with Tristan, he took to drinking all day and then moved on to drugs, rapidly plunging off the rails from there.

A plan was forming in my mind, a way to exact revenge on Alex for her actions. And I'd do it with a smile on my face too. The results wouldn't be immediate, but they would ultimately be satisfying. And I knew I would feel a sense of justice when it was done.

Christian’s POV

I'd been at Nathan’s penthouse all morning. I was settled into a chair, drinking coffee. Nathan was unusually worried about the wedding planning and called to ask for my help. Now I was waiting patiently for him to return from taking a call.
