Alex had been back for a week now, but I hadn’t seen her. She must be avoiding me as much as I'm avoiding her, I thought snidely. My blood boiled in anger at the thought of spending any more time with her.

Nathan walked back in. He must have been able to tell something was bothering me.

"What's on your mind?" he asked, my body language probably revealing my tension.

I took a deep breath before speaking, my voice seething.

"It's Alex. I can't stand being in the same room as her. I’m wondering how we’ll manage to be in a wedding together.”

Nathan looked at me sympathetically. "I know you two don't get along, but you're both part of the bridal party, and I need you to work together."

My jaw tightened. "I'll work with her, but I'm not letting her get away with what she did to my brother."

“She’s really not all that bad. You sure something else isn’t biting you?”

I rolled my eyes and looked out the window.

“I just hate to think of her getting away with what she did,” I said tightly.

“You’re adults. Work on your shit.”

“You’re not going to support me, man? I’m your best man!” I said, laughing out loud.

“Sophie would kill me, and I’m not risking it,” Nathan replied, indignantly.

“You simp!” I said, taking a sip of the hot coffee.

“You’re scared of Sophie. You know she’d kill you too,” Nathan retorted, smirking at me.

I got out of the chair, deposited my coffee cup on the nearby table, and swaggered toward the door.

“I’ll tell Sophie the terrible things you say about her coffee. Let’s see if you survive that” I told him, before stepping out of the door.

I had to leave before I snapped. Alex was working her way back into everyone’s affections. As usual, she was playing the princess card perfectly, just as I’d expected.

As I made my way down the hallway, I heard footsteps approaching.

I rounded the corner to see Alex and Sophie walking towards me. My eyes narrowed as I glared at Alex. I was surprised. She looked much better than I remembered, her summery dress setting off her green eyes and blond hair so perfectly.

"What are you doing here?" I spat.

Her eyes widened in surprise. "We have a meeting with Nathan to plan the wedding. What's your problem?"

"My problem is you," I growled, taking a step closer to her. "I can't stand being around you. You ruined my brother's life, and I won't let you forget it."

Sophie stepped in between us, her eyes angry. "That's enough, Christian. You’re not ruining my wedding with your pettiness.”

I looked at her. "You don't understand, Sophie. She’s not even sorry about what she did."

Alex rolled her eyes. "I didn't break your brother's heart, Christian. He made his own mistakes, and he paid the price for them. You need to let it go and move on."

I blazed with fury. "You can’t expect everyone to pretend everything’s fine.”

Alex scoffed. "What do you expect me to do, Christian? Apologize? He deserved everything he got.”

I shot back. "You’re bold, waltzing into town as nothing happened."

"That's not true," Alex retorted. “I didn't do anything to your brother that he didn't do to himself."
