“Let’s go.”

But there was no time to go. Because the sound of running footsteps echoed in the hallway, coming closer and closer.

The window was shut. Could we get out in time?

No. No, we can’t.

We locked eyes just as the handle jiggled.

Chapter Twenty

I grabbed Razai’s hand and pulled him to the storage closet, shutting us inside a second before the door opened. Two people entered the office.

I released a shaky breath. We would have definitely been caught. At the very least, they would have heard the window sliding open and shutting. They could have opened it afterward and seen us run off.

We need to move back more. Take cover.

I wasn’t sure how or why, but I knew it. We’d be caught still. I pushed him softly and whispered, “Move back, quickly.”

“Alright, alright.”

As the newcomers loitered, we moved behind the single storage rack of the cramped closet. It had a narrow space behind it and a corner that could protect us.

“Faster,” I urged.

“I’m trying,” he insisted. “There’s a broom in the way.”

“Then move it.”

“Really? I was planning on using it for a waltz.”

“That literally makes no sense.”

Finally, he made the space to free up the corner. My hands still on his chest, I pushed him a little faster until his back hit the wall and my body hovered just an inch away from him.

Not enough.

The newcomer’s voices finally rose a little, and the office door shut. Someone was giggling. A girl, by the sound.

“Ah,” Razai said softly. “It’s Friday night.”

“What does that mean?”

“You know, even as you whisper, you manage to make it sound demanding. You must put that on your resume. Good gods, see, now I can practically hear your eyes rolling.”

“You don’t know me that well,” I shot back, pretending like I hadn’t done exactly that.

His chest shook with laughter.

I knew because I was still touching him there. My hands dropped like lead weights, a flush filling my cheeks.

Razai’s tone dropped. “No need to be embarrassed, Detective. We’re all friends here.” Except the way he’d said it made it seem like the exact opposite. Like we weren’t friends at all, and the insinuation only increased the buzz of adrenaline.

Needing a distraction from his closeness, I carefully pivoted in place until my back was to Razai and then peeked out.

A girl sat on Clave’s desk, her legs spread around none other than Cole Highland as they kissed hungrily.

You’ve got to be kidding me.
