She nods, her eyes looking into mine. If my free hand, I reach up and place my hand against her cheek. “You were an unexpected surprise that I am glad I found. We grow from here.” My hand slides behind her head as I draw her closer. “you are my angel. I will protect you and your heart.” Placing my lips on hers and slowly moving with hers.

My heart is pounding in my chest. My mind is racing as her scent fills my lungs. She smells like spice and coconut. A scent I was never into until I smell it on her skin. “Let’s get you home so you can rest for tomorrow. I’ll follow you home, and I will meet you at your house tomorrow morning at nine.” She nods her head and slides off my lap, whispering that she was heading to the bathroom before we left.

Chapter Nine

Mae

The dream last night was erotic and filled with romance. I woke up a few times in the night to seek the pleasure my body was craving. I have never been a girl that constantly had to click the button and have a release until Max walked into my life. He makes me want to let the walls down that I built up around my heart. Ones that I had set in place after my last male friend decided that I needed work.

“Mae, if you lost a little weight, you’d be perfect. I could wrap my hands around you as we swayed on the dance floor at the club.”He said, as we walked by a line filled with men and women waiting to get into a dance club.

“Mae, sweetheart. You have a gentleman caller.” My mom says, as she knocks on the door and pushes it open.

“Thanks mom. Max is here to accompany us to dad’s funeral.” I whisper as tears fill my eyes and spill over my cheeks. I have been strong in front of my mom. Not allowing the reality to set in that my dad is no longer with us.

“Sweetheart, your father would be proud of you. No matter what job that you are doing, he would be proud. You were his baby girl, and he made sure that everyone knew how special and talented you are.” My mom says, her are wrapping around my middle.

“Mom, how are you doing?” I ask, hoping that she has been able to rest.

“My doll, you know I knew your dad was sick. No matter how many doctors we saw, they all focused on the same thing. But I knew that something deeper was going on. I miss him every day, but he isn’t sick anymore. He is back to before he had all these issues. For that, I am grateful. In time, I will heel and I will do plan on traveling as much as I can.” She says, stepping back with a smile. “Now, who is that divine man standing at the front door?”

“Max was a customer at Club Curve last night. He put the mean girls in their place and then chased me down and made his intentions known.” I say, grabbing my purse off my dresser and looping my arm through hers.

“Well, he is a great specimen to look at.” She states, as she and I reach the bottom of the stairs.

“Thank you, ma’am. I believe that is the first time I have been called a specimen.” Max says, smiling at my mom as her cheeks flush red.

“Thank you for coming Max. You didn’t have to.” I state.

Max’s finger comes up to my chin and lifts my eyes to his. “I wanted to.” He whispers, lowering his head to mine and placing his lips against mine. His lips are soft and the move perfectly with mine. My mom’s sigh brings me back from the brink of bliss.

“Let’s get going.” Max states, pulling my hand into his and opening the door, allowing my mom to walk out ahead of us. His hand never leaves mine until we get close to a chrome plated, black pickup truck. He opens the door for my mom and offers his hand to help her in.

“Shouldn’t we take two vehicles?” I ask, what happens if Max turns out to be like all the other men. Someone who turns into a total douchebag.

“Nonsense. Max will drive us and make sure we are safe. We will need it after the service and the internment.” Mom states, buckling up her seatbelt as Max closes her door and steps into my space.

“I promise, sweet girl, I only want to make sure that you and your mom are safe. You captivated me during your dance. But you made me feel protective over you when you opened your mouth and put thing one and thing two in their place. But what sealed my soul to yours was that kiss in your house. You are everything that I have been searching for. You slide down that pole, and the only thing I could think about was how I would get to be mine. You, Mae Ironside, are my unicorn. A female that you envisioned, but thought were out of reach. You are my unicorn.” He states, placing his hand on my cheek and letting me see how sincere he is. Giving him a small smile as I place my hand on his.

My dad’s death has taught me to seize the day. Life is too short to let the walls around your heart rule when love is right in front of you.

Chapter Ten

Commando

Two weeks later…

Viking:Coast is clear. Charges have been dropped. You’re free to come back home.

I stare at the text for the fifth time since it came in. Mae and I have a date today. We agreed to spend the entire day together, walking through town before going to the bigger town for dinner and dancing tonight.

Hitting Viking’s name on my screen, I place the call. I need more information from them. It should have taken longer than what it did.

“Talk,” Viking states, the noise in the background low, but you can tell that there are a group of people behind him.

“Tell me everything that was said? I have a bad feeling about this.” I say, looking at myself in the mirror. I am wearing a black button-up shirt with the club’s logo on the breast pocket, a pair of faded black jeans and polished black combat boots.

“Commando, I promise there is nothing to worry about. Judge dug up some information that linked the detective to Bambi. They also found text messages and e-mails extorting Carleighane. Bambi’s family wasn’t happy when they figured out what happened.” Viking says, as he moves from the loud area into a more quitter one. “Who is she?” He asks.
