But I’m also a Valkyrie and I’m not alone. My friends are here.

Solstice is here.

Killian… is here.

When I opened my eyes, it was to take in Killian’s white-washed gaze.

“Are you back?” he asked.

My limbs trembled, but after doing a mental check, I nodded.

“Yes,” I whispered, but urgency made my heart pummel in my chest. “But we don’t have much time, Killian. We have to find her.”

Killian nodded and helped me mount Solstice. I still felt wobbly after my experience, but my stomach would settle soon.

Or I hoped it would, anyway.

Killian waited for me to go first. I realized it was because only I knew the way.

Right.

Leaning into Solstice’s flank, I whispered my encouragement in her ear. We communicated in a special way. Other Dragonriders had their own language with their wyverns, but Solstice and I shared so much more.

I pictured the darkness in my mind and the general pull in the direction it had come from.

North, I told her, not with words, but with sensation.

She rumbled her understanding beneath me, sending her scales vibrating against my palm.

“That’s my girl,” I whispered, glad that she could lift off while I recovered.

For some reason, sharing my mind with the Lost Dragon Queen in this realm had done a number on me.

As if it had been draining, somehow. And given that I was struggling to heal, I doubted I would feel better soon.

Solstice opened her wings. A picture of dust and shadows unfurling warned me of her launch.

She wasn’t going to hold back.

Pitching my weight, I gripped onto her talons and sent back a mental response of encouragement.

Fly, Solstice.

And don’t look back.

CHAPTER 8

My stomach lurched as Solstice responded with an immediate thrust of her wings. We shot into the sky as dust and shadows swirled around me, just as she had predicted.

Topaz’s roar echoed behind us, sending us unfurling into the pitch with the knowledge that our bonded were with us.

Solstice lit the sky with golden fire. The heat broke apart the shadows and gave us a view of below.

So much darkness.

So much death.

This realm was unlike any place I had ever been.
