Solstice jerked from beneath me as Obsidian released a roar of outrage. The onyx dragon shot a stream of bright fire into the sky that seemed to burn away the clouds.

Jasmine balled her hands into fists, then leaned over to Jade and whispered in her ear.

“Fly, Jade.”

Her words carried to me on the cold wind and I watched as Jade launched into the air, taking Jasmine toward the palace.

It looked like Killian and I were on our own.

There was rounded fury in his eyes. Their bright shade stood out against the shadows, giving him an ethereal look.

This time he met my gaze with one of grim determination. “Tell me where to go, Vivi. Lead, and I will follow.”

I nodded, then closed my eyes and reached inside of myself to sense the Dragon Egg we were here for.

As much as I wanted to rush toward Vern, I was out of my element. I doubted I could overpower the Vampire Kind. We’d made a deal, so it gave him full authority to do what he was doing right now. Not even the Dean would stand by me if I chose to renege on it.

Having an hour to find the egg was a luxury, one I would not squander.

Hopefully, it wouldn’t cost Vern his life.

CHAPTER 7

Come on, where are you? I ventured as I searched for the Lost Queen trapped in this realm.

I’d opted to sit on the ground for this part of the process while Killian, Solstice, and Topaz stood guard.

Knowing that I was well protected gave me a sense of peace, even in this dangerous place.

Energy was distorted here and my brows furrowed as I struggled to shift through the chilled atmosphere.

I went past the palace toward a broken, barren land with only snarls of dead vines.

But then I sensed her… an unborn dragon deep within that long stretch of nothingness.

There was no question when I found her. Panic rushed through me and stole the breath from my lungs. Her sense of being surrounded, her fear, it was all so much more palpable now that we were in the same realm.

I’m here, I tried to tell her, but she couldn’t hear me.

Instead, our connection seemed to threaten to overwhelm me and I could faintly hear Killian’s panicked voice calling me back to him.

“Vivi? Vivi, say something. Vivi!”

I wanted to answer him, but a choking sense of paralyzing terror held me captive. The sensation of shadows and spiders crawling all around me, slowly chipping away at my shell, made it impossible to move.

There wasn’t much time. I wanted to draw in my first breath. The shell that contained me had grown cold and confining. It was time to leave, to spread my new wings and explore the world.

But danger lurked on the outside just waiting to devour me whole.

Killian’s energy hit me like a punch.

But he hadn’t punched me. He’d kissed me.

My own sense of self reared to the forefront as I remembered who I was and why I was here.

I’m not an unborn Dragon Queen.

I’m Vivienne Reid. A Dragonrider and in way over my head.
