By the cover of darkness, I got dressed and made my way through the house. I left a note, determined to make things right even if I never saw him again. I left him a note telling him I was going to send him a series of recordings for him to listen to and do what he needed.

I snuck out the penthouse as quietly as I could, hoping he didn't wake. Since staying with Wes, I learned he had a habit of waking in the night for one reason or another, something to drink, something to eat, a bathroom break, or just because something was on his mind.

I reached the elevator and smiled happily as I hit the button. Just as I did, he opened the door to the penthouse. “Eloise, don’t you dare!”

“Goodbye Wes.” I knew I only had moments to escape, it felt like the craziest thing I’d ever done in my life. I was like a prisoner to him over something he thought was true that wasn’t.

I didn't know where to go but once I arrived at the ground floor, the doorman was in pursuit.

“Miss, you need to stay right where you are. We’ve called the authorities; they are on their way.”

Frantic, I ran back to the elevator and took it back up to another floor. Once out of the elevator I ran as fast I could for the stairs, praying I didn't trip and hurt my baby. I didn't even have time to think.

I was being stalked like a criminal, and Wes was the cause of it. Sienna was the one who’d done all of this, and probably the one who’d originally stole everything that Wes accused me of doing to Danny back then and I was being blamed for it.

I made it back downstairs and slipped out the door before the doorman caught me and ran as quickly as I could. I didn't stop until I was 3 blocks away. I was scared, unsure where to go. If I went back to my place, he might show up there or the police would.

A diner was across the street but then I realized I left my purse and money there which meant I couldn’t eat, or drink and I was starting to get hungry. I did the only thing I could think of to do, call the only man I knew would help.

Chapter Fifteen

Wes

She was gone, no one caught her, and she was gone. I hated doing it, but I called the authorities, and they filed a report. She left her purse so I had her ID and other things which meant she would have to come back.

I found her note, and eventually the recordings she sent me but didn't have time to listen to them, as I got a text from my brother Danny.

Wes, I have Eloise. I need to talk to you about all this, but I have her safe and I need to sort thisout with her first. Don’t try to find her, I will make sure she is safe, and for god's sake don’t talkto Sienna.

Angry, I tossed the phone aside. Restless and unable to fall back to sleep I debated showing up at his penthouse. I was certain then that Eloise was still in love with my brother, and whatever lies she was conjuring up he was certain to believe them because he was so gullible when it came to women.

I felt stressed, grabbed a whiskey off the sideboard and forced myself to sit down and look at her emails. They were recordings, I was in no mood to sit and listen to such nonsense, whatever they were, an apology for leaving, a statement of her guilt, I didn't care.

Eloise was gone, she didn't take any time to talk to me, explain anything and ran straight to my brother after everything we’d shared. It bothered me more than I wanted it to. I knew I should have been thankful that she was gone but she was in the worst place ever, my brother’s arms.

For a few seconds I debated telling Sienna, at least he wouldn’t be marrying her but after Shawn’s opinion of her I didn't think that was too important. At that moment I didn't know if he was the father of her baby and wondered if a paternity test would even reveal the details since we were brothers.

After an hour of cursing her and every woman on the planet out I decided I would visit the pawn shop in the morning. Someone was going to give me answers, and if they didn’t, they would find out what I could do with all my connections.

I showed up at 11AM, the time they opened and was greeted by the shop owner and another man looking like his cousin or another relative. “Ah, I see you are back. I don’t think we forgot anything of yours. Where is our friend?” He was cheerful and welcoming.

“I wouldn’t know. That’s what I am here to find out, I’m looking for her as well.” The man looked confused for a moment. “You mean she isn’t with Sienna?”

Warning bells went off in my head. I blinked them away. “Why would she be with her?”

“Because they are friends and Sienna is always the one who comes in, with or without her.

Recently they’ve come together but it’s always Sienna.”

My mind was racing for answers. I thought back to when I originally accused Eloise of stealing from my family. “There must be a mistake. Sienna would never…”

A strange look crossed over the man's face, he looked at his partner and started rambling. “I’m sorry, I think I have confused her with someone else. Forgive, I have not seen your friend, she hasn’t been here at all recently.”

He moved to a glass case. “Look, we have some fine jewels in here. I could give you something, anything you want. Just have a look, I’m sorry for the confusion.” I noticed the other man moving away from us towards the back-room door, his phone in his hand.

Tempted to smash both their heads together I thought better of it. I was not light weight and could easily hold my own but at two against one with no sleep on my part it would mean a bit of extra work.

I smiled. “Okay, that sounds good. Let me take a look at what I have here.” I hit the button on my phone that called my driver and kept my eyes on the glass case and tried to make sense of everything that was happening.
