“Nick, please,” I heard Lisa begging more desperately this time. “You can’t kill him. You’ll go to jail.”

And then another thought occurred. Lisa was right. I shouldn’t kill him, but not because of the jail time. If I killed him, then I can never find out why he came after her and why this bastard chose her to kill. Everything would be over too quickly for him.

No, killing him would be too easy. I needed to make him suffer first.

“Who the fuck are you, motherfucker?” I snarled at him. He put his hand weakly over his face and whimpered like a baby.

“I’m sorry,” he sobbed. “I didn’t want to kill her, but I was desperate. I needed the money.”

“What money?”

“The bounty.”

I frowned at the man. “You better be straight with me before I stuff my entire fist down your throat. What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Someone placed a bounty on her. On the dark webs. He said he was going to pay me a hundred thousand dollars to kill her.”

I glanced at Lisa and saw my shock reflected in her eyes.

“What kind of horseshit excuse is that?” It sounded like a bad movie plot, not even remotely believable. “Do you really expect us to believe that?”

“It’s true,” he wheezed desperately. “Someone has been sending people to kill you. Come on, don’t tell me you haven’t noticed.”

“Oh my gosh,” Lisa gasped suddenly and stared at me wide-eyed. “The car. In the parking lot.”

I instantly knew what she was talking about, remembering how the car seemingly barreled out of nowhere and kept going after nearly knocking her down.

Lisa turned to me and shot me a stubborn look. “I told you it wasn’t my fault.”

But I was too frozen in fear to eat crow. Because it was right then that I understood someone was gunning for my woman.

“Call the police,” I said, feeling like my world had just turned upside down.

TWENTY-FIVE

LISA

It finally started to sink in once the police got there.

Before that, I found myself surprisingly numb to the whole thing. I supposed it could have been the shock of it all. I was just attacked and nearly killed by the man currently lying on the floor. The man who just informed me that there was a bounty on my head. Someone wanted me dead and was willing to pay a hundred grand for it. It sounded almost ridiculous, but I couldn’t deny that the guy on the floor appeared serious. And he seemed even more terrified than I was, although that possibly had more to do with the fact that Nick was standing above him, still glaring at him with a murderous look on his face.

Like, any moment now, Nick would resume the beatdown until he’d broken every single bone in the man’s body.

Nick was a large man, but he’d never struck me as the violent type. Then again, I’d never seen Nick that angry before.

If I didn’t know him, I would have been terrified too. His entire face was glacially cool, but his eyes were still simmering with a murderous heat. He kept his focus on my attacker as though making sure he wouldn’t escape. Not like the man could do much. Nick had tied his hands with a belt, and from the way the man groaned in pain, I doubted he could move much. Nick must have caused a lot of damage and probably would have continued if I hadn’t intervened.

But I didn’t feel any remorse for the assailant, not when he’d nearly killed me.

That was when it hit me. I almost died.

I wasn’t even aware of letting out a sound until Nick was suddenly at my side, his eyes filled with concern.

“What is it?” he asked, but I shook my head. I didn’t know what to say. There was rising pressure in my throat, but I felt like if I spoke, I would start bawling, and that wasn’t what the situation needed. We needed to stay calm until we got this all figured out. So I decided to suck it up.

Although Nick didn’t look like he believed me.

Either way, we were distracted by the sound of sirens in the distance.
